It always amazes me how many Christians I meet who don’t know what the Bible teaches. The Bible is the manual for the Christian life and is the revelation of God Himself, who we must love more than anything in order to be saved in the end. Matthew 10:37 Do we read the instructions for a new electronic device, which will wear out in three years or less and need replaced? How much more crucial it is to read and understand the information that will determine our eternal salvation or damnation and that of those we love.

It is dangerous to simply believe everything you hear from another person, even a preacher. We are all imperfect humans and make mistakes. God tells us to “work out your salvation with fear and trembling”. Philippians 2:12 We alone are accountable to God for what we believe and how we live. We need to know what He has told us, so we can obey Him and will know when we are hearing lies.

Many people think the Bible is difficult to understand, so they don't try. Actually, it was written on a 6th grade level. Sure there are topics that are open to differing opinions, but the majority is easily understood, especially when you ask the Holy Spirit to enlighten you as you study. The Rabbis of old said that scripture has 70 layers of meanings, so after we learn the obvious meaning of a passage, there is still a wealth of knowledge to be gained from further study, with His help.

I am going to "demystify" how to study the Bible in a few short, easy lessons in the hopes of encouraging you to explore the riches it holds for you. Look in the label cloud under "Christianity 101" for lessons you have missed and God bless your efforts! I'm always available to you in e-mail and I pray for everyone who visits here.

CHRISTIANITY 101 – 10

Writing a list of scriptures on a blank page in your Bible to aid you in sharing the gospel of salvation with someone can be helpful. We have a small New Testament called the Share Jesus Without Fear New Testament from Holman Bible Publishers. I’m going to share their list with you. I hope I’m not breaking any rules in doing so. I think they want the most people equipped to save souls just like I do, so I’m sharing:

Step 1
Use questions that determine where God is working.
1. Do you have any kind of spiritual belief?
2. To you, who is Jesus?
3. Do you believe there is a heaven and a hell?
4. If you died right now, where would you go? If heaven, why?
5. If what you believe were not true, would you want to know it?

If the answer to the last question is “Yes”, then open your Bible and proceed to Step Two.

If the answer to the last question is “No,” do nothing but thank the person for their time.

Step 2
Let the Bible speak. Ask the person to read the verse aloud. Then ask, “What does this say to you?” Listen to the person.
1. Romans 3:23 – “All have sinned.”
2. Romans 6:23 – “The wages of sin is death.”
3. John 3:3 – You must be born again. Ask, “Why did Jesus come to die?”
4. John 14:6 – “I am the way.”
5. Romans 10:9-11 – “If you confess…you will be saved.”
6. 2Corinthians 5:15 – “No longer live for themselves.”
7. Revelation 3:20 – “I stand at the door, and knock.”

Now you are ready to use the closing questions in Step Three.

Step 3
Close with key questions.
1. Are you a sinner?
2. Do you want forgiveness for your sins?
3. Do you believe Jesus died on the cross for you and rose again?
4. Are you willing to surrender your life to Christ?
5. Are you ready to invite Jesus into your heart and into your life?
Be Silent…and Pray. If they want to be saved, have them pray with you repeating that they repent for their sins, that they are giving their life to Him forever and are asking Jesus to be their Savior in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Now have them read Mark 16:16 aloud.
“He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.”
Explain that “baptized” means “immersed” and this is referring to water baptism and is as much a command of God as repenting and accepting Jesus as your Savior. It is not for us to pick and choose what we obey – we’ve been bought with a price and He is our Lord and Master. Help them arrange for their baptism in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Discuss the Holy Spirit Baptism, why Jesus provided this for us and how to receive it.

Leave your new brother or sister-in-Christ with the name of a Christian fellowship and encourage them to start attending so they can learn, grow and enjoy the fellowship of the body of Christ.
