It always amazes me how many Christians I meet who don’t know what the Bible teaches. The Bible is the manual for the Christian life and is the revelation of God Himself, who we must love more than anything in order to be saved in the end. Matthew 10:37 Do we read the instructions for a new electronic device, which will wear out in three years or less and need replaced? How much more crucial it is to read and understand the information that will determine our eternal salvation or damnation and that of those we love.

It is dangerous to simply believe everything you hear from another person, even a preacher. We are all imperfect humans and make mistakes. God tells us to “work out your salvation with fear and trembling”. Philippians 2:12 We alone are accountable to God for what we believe and how we live. We need to know what He has told us, so we can obey Him and will know when we are hearing lies.

Many people think the Bible is difficult to understand, so they don't try. Actually, it was written on a 6th grade level. Sure there are topics that are open to differing opinions, but the majority is easily understood, especially when you ask the Holy Spirit to enlighten you as you study. The Rabbis of old said that scripture has 70 layers of meanings, so after we learn the obvious meaning of a passage, there is still a wealth of knowledge to be gained from further study, with His help.

I am going to "demystify" how to study the Bible in a few short, easy lessons in the hopes of encouraging you to explore the riches it holds for you. Look in the label cloud under "Christianity 101" for lessons you have missed and God bless your efforts! I'm always available to you in e-mail and I pray for everyone who visits here.

CHRISTIANITY 101 - Using Your Bible Lesson 9

The Bible Is A Manual To Be Used

It’s cliché, but true…
BIBLE = Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth

This is God’s manual for human life on earth.

"Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.” Matthew 24:35; Mark 13:31; Luke 21:33

Use your Bible with reverence as it is the Eternal, Inerrant, Living Word of God, but do use it in any way that will assist your learning it thoroughly.

It is perfectly fine to underline or highlight passages and make important notes in the margins. This will help you immensely in your studies. I use different colors when underlining or highlighting to categorize the subject matter. Red is for all scriptures pertaining to salvation (the blood of Jesus), silver, gold, etc.

Many people find it more comfortable to share the gospel of salvation with those who are not yet saved if they have written a list of salvation scriptures on a blank page in their Bible for quick easy reference. It’s written in the order they want to present each part of the plan of salvation, so even if they get nervous, it’s right there for them and it can’t fall out and be lost. In the next lesson I will offer a list of scriptures you can use if you wish. “Always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence”. 1 Peter 3:15

If you have a leather bound Bible, it’s better not to use a Bible cover with it as it needs the oils in your skin to keep it from cracking. It’s also good to occasionally rub it with a good leather treatment to make it last.

Once you have studied many hours in your Bible, underlined and made it your own, you will find it is a terrible loss when you loose it. You might be surprised how often they get lost! It’s always a good idea to write your name and contact information in your Bible for just such a time.

I gave you this angel in gold and neutrals in December, but it's so lovely in pewter that I'm going to give that to you too. I gave you a gorgeous paper using this angel a couple of days ago. If you missed it or the first angel, you can still get them in the archives in the left column. I'm happy for you to download, but please respect my terms of use. There is a link to them below the angel.

If you download, leave me some love at the bottom of the post and God bless your use of it!
