These sweet bunnyladies with arms full of goodies remind me of the hospitality of days gone by when most wives were at home, raising the children, keeping house and being the fabric that wove people into families and communities. When someone was sick or there was a death, they took food, watched children, ran errands, cleaned the house, called on the phone and sent cards. They knew if a family was hungry and organized neighbors to help. People were hospitable and showed the kindness and caring that made communities.

Today, so many wives are in the work force that this is something many of you will read and never have experienced. Even in the church, you will be hard pressed to find a sister-in-Christ to call and talk with on the phone for more than a moment because she's so busy. The link is largely severed that allowed those with older children to be a parenting resource for those with younger children and the more mature Christian to be a resource for the new babe in Christ, which is God's will for us. Families are suffering. The work of Christ is suffering. Communities pretty much don't exist any more beyond a collection of cold buildings.

  • "Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good, so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored." Titus 2:3-5
Most people don't know their neighbors beyond a name and a wave when you see them in passing. We don't know when their spouse is diagnosed terminal and then dies. We don't know when they have a child, unless we happen to see them coming and going. Have they lost their job? Are they facing the deployment of a loved one? Are they about to loose their home?
  • "Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it." Hebrews 13:2
  • "...having a reputation for good works; and if she has brought up children, if she has shown hospitality to strangers, if she has washed the saints' feet, if she has assisted those in distress, and if she has devoted herself to every good work." 1 Timothy 5:10
  • "Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor; not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer, contributing to the needs of the saints (God's people), practicing hospitality." Romans 12:10-13
This is God's will for those called by His name.
  • "asked Him (Jesus), 'What commandment is the foremost of all?' Jesus answered, 'The foremost is, 'HEAR, O ISRAEL! THE LORD OUR GOD IS ONE LORD; AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.' 'The second is this, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' There is no other commandment greater than these." Mark 12:28-31 (All capitals means a quote in the New Testament of Old Testament text.)
