I'm going to share something personal as groundwork for what God has taught me very recently. I work around the clock. I know that God wants balance in our lives and for us to exercise self-control in all things, so I try hard to stop and go to bed at a reasonable hour. I do pretty well for a long time and then one day when I can hardly function at all I realize that it's been quite a while since I got more than 2 hrs. sleep. You'd think that would be enough, but it usually takes me really trying for a while longer before I can discipline myself to go to bed at a descent hour. I struggle with this all the time as there is so much to do.

I've been on one of those periods where I can barely function and I was SO looking forward to going to bed. Literally physically ill because of exhaustion, and barely able to see, unable to drive (I know you are glad to hear I don't when I'm like this). I was in bed gratefully trying to shut my mind off to sleep - was just drifting off when the phone rang. Not wanting it to wake my husband who has to be up at 5am for work, I ran for it. This person had something very important in her spiritual life that she really needed to talk about. We talked all night and I got back to bed at 3am, very honored to be of service to my King, and very, very bad off. I'm still not at all recovered from the cumulative effects of weeks of my undisciplined not taking care of myself and working too hard. And on top of this is dear Jenifer in ICU and time for this too that I'm so exhaused for and is being a spiritual trial as I love her so and it's so hard to see her suffering. I'm also putting myself at greater risk of catching something from the hospital because I'm so worn down, which would further impair my service to the King. When we are worn down physically we are also much more vulnerable to spiritual attack also, which is serious business.

What God showed me from that night was sobering. We know that when we repent of our sins and ask Him to save us, we take Him as our Savior. We take Him as Lord and Master. We are making a COVENANT with Him that we will live our lives for Him, love and obey Him in all things if He will save us from hell, forgiving our sins. We are no longer our own, but have been bought with a price, the cross. We are His servant, He is our Master, we don't own ourselves but are bought with a price - how dare I use the time He's giving me in such a way that I am not fit for service when my Master calls. Every moment of my life belongs to Him to use as He wishes and the cry of my heart is just that. Yes, I'm working on the blog for Him is the "work" that I allow to keep me from rest, but I have a responsibility to take care of this physical body and be sure that as one of His warriors, I am ready for battle at any moment He should call. My lack of self-discipline and not taking care of myself renders me less effective, less useful in His service and I do not have the right to do this. It hurts my heart that I have rendered myself less useful in His service in one area while serving in another.

Picture it this way, you are OWNED by a king for the purpose of being a warrior in his service. He hasn't called you to fight right now, so you hire yourself out as a mercenary and fight for your own profit. Then when the king calls you and says it's time to put your armor on and fight the the enemy, you are exhausted, weak and not only useless to him as a warrior, but are very likely to get picked off by the enemy in your weakened state.

He was so tender and loving showing me this and I am so grateful. I added the "how dare you" when the depth of what He was showing me sank in. I think keeping this truth before me, that I render myself less useful to Him when I spend myself too much in this service to Him, will help me make sure I get to bed at a reasonable time. It's easy to get out of balance when the activity in question is for Him, but there is still other service we must be ready for. A warrior too exhausted to hold up their shield will be picked off in battle. Lord how I love that You are so intimate with us that You see every detail and care enough to get our attention amidst the turmoil of our lives and show us the way more perfectly in love! I thrive on You showing how close You are and how You care. I can't thank You enough for reproving me that I may grow and bear better fruit in You! I love You forever!
