When I think of "rock", so many things come to mind. One of them is both marvelous and sobering and tells us so much about God, who is our Rock.

Once God had freed the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, they had a journey ahead of them to the land He was giving them. It was a dry and barren place and there were so many of them and their animals to feed and water. They grumbled. God told Moses to "speak to the rock" before the people and He would bring forth water from the rock for all to drink. Numbers 20:8

"Then Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod; and water came forth abundantly, and the congregation and their beasts drank. But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, "Because you have not believed Me, to treat Me as holy in the sight of the sons of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them." Numbers 20:11-12

Firstly the marvelous example of how we can be in such a spot that it seems utterly impossible that things could work out, yet God is always able to take care of those who have given their lives to Him and is faithful to do so, even when we don't deserve it, to the point of bringing water from a rock! Because Moses disobeyed, God didn't have to bring the water, but He knew His people needed it and He still met their needs out of compassion and love for them.

Now the sobering part. Moses had a very, very special relationship with God and served Him a long time and at great personal danger. He believed and obeyed God through some events that would have been difficult to do so. This time he disobeyed. To us it doesn't seem a big thing..."speak to the rock"; "strike the rock". But in our human wisdom we miss the point. When he disobeyed, felt it was just fine to alter what God had commanded, to fit his own opinion of how it should be, he DIDN'T TREAT GOD AS HOLY. He didn't believe God.

Those two things were of such great import to God that even after the relationship He had with Moses and all the service Moses had done Him, Moses was not allowed to enter the promised land. God still loved him. Moses still obeyed God and brought the people to the edge of the promised land, but he did not get to enter it. God, in His loving kindness, took Moses up Mt. Nebo and showed him all the land, reminding him that he could not go there. Moses died there in Moab and God Himself buried him. Deuteronomy 34:1-6

Such a loving God. He buried Moses Himself! But He is also a God who means what He says and is to be honored and obeyed. Though He still loved Moses, he did not lift the penalty of his disobedience. He means what He says and since He created all that is, He has the right to make ALL the rules! We get to choose whether to obey or disobey. But let us learn from Moses that there are consequences to every action - good consequences for good choices and bad consequences for bad choices. Just as a good loving parent sets boundaries for their children and enforces them without wavering, so does our Heavenly Father, that we might learn to respect and honor Him.

It would be good for many Christian church leaders to reread these passages and remember that it has never been ok for man to alter what God says. For any reason. No matter how insignificant that change looks to us. News flash: We don't know better than God!

The title "God" means He is in charge and we are to obey. We are so very blessed in America to live in freedom. But a byproduct of this is that when we come to God for salvation through His only Son Jesus, we lack any concept of "Lord, master, king, ruler" and as such we lack the concept of being the ones who must mold ourselves to another as "slave, servant, bond-servant, created being". Our very freedom makes it difficult to find the right attitudes and relationship with our Heavenly Father. Read His Word, seek His face, receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit to empower and guide you in your walk with God and you will find Him and the correct relationship that brings joy, life and true freedom!

One last thought - as Americans we have been taught to think, "He obeyed and served all those years and only disobeyed once, so he shouldn't have been penalized". Once again reread the part about "He created everything and gets to make ALL the rules". The good news is today we live in the age of grace through Christ Jesus. If we have obeyed the Bible in giving our lives to Christ and are living faithfully afterward, "if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin." 1 John 1:7 Such good news! That means as long as we are living in obedience and love for Him, then when we slip and miss the mark, we are instantly convicted in our spirits, repent with our whole hearts and are cleansed of our sin by His blood which has redeemed us! It is that unbroken fellowship with Jesus that keeps us saved so we need not live in fear as long as we are living for Him. There will still be consequences to our choices, but we are safe eternally.
