Christmas/New Year Paper Kit Freebie

Happy New Year! I pray that every one of you has the best year ever and that you grow closer to our God. Here is an article I came across that says something important I have talked to you about before. I hope it blesses you as we strive to be more pleasing to Him this coming year.

Bossing God Around by Mark O. Wilson

A nine year old boy was given a full grown St. Bernard for Christmas. Viewing his present with extreme delight and wonder, he exclaimed, “Wow!!! That’s great!!! But is he mine – or am I his?”

Now, that’s a great question for every Christian: Is Jesus mine – or am I His?

The answer ought to be “Yes!”

It is certainly a wonderful fact that Christ is a friend like no other. He meets our needs. He satisfies our deepest longings. He is a present help in the hour of trouble. He is the one who steps in when the rest of the world steps out.

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! He is my Savior, my Deliverer, my Joy, and my Strength!

We must never forget, however, who we are and who God is. We don’t “own” Him.

George Barna, conducting recent research of American evangelical churches concluded that there is a deep-rooted self centeredness at the core of our religious expressions. A “consumer mind set” prevails across the board – “I’m involved with church for what I get out of it.” What’s in it for me? No wonder religion seems so empty.

I’ve had well meaning friends tell me how they boss God around when they pray: “God, I need this and that. You really have to come through for me here. I’m counting on you and you had better not let me down!”

There’s something wrong with this picture.

We need God – but He doesn’t need us. He is willing to help and strengthen us – but we don’t have the right to give him orders. (end of quote)

And I'd personally add, people loudly and boldly thanking God for things they never asked Him for but think that thanking Him for it obligates Him, by virtue of our faith, to do/give what we say. We will never be God's boss, not even by faith. True, without faith we won't get anything, but having it doesn't make Him have to do anything outside of His will. Remember, our Lord Jesus taught us to pray, "As You will, not as I will", and He was the Son of God!

Today's gift for you is this gorgeous kit of Papers for Christmas and New Years - enjoy!

Paper Nativity Figures at My Little House Freebie

I promised to update you on our progress making this adorable paper nativity from My Little House with the children in my Bible class...we finished it today!!!
To recap: First, in reading over all the pages I decided that the creche and manger would be too difficult for them so I made them myself before starting the project with the children. I also made the first palm tree just to see how the branches would work ahead of time (I decided to add a few extra branches). This is how it looks so far (sitting on Boo's bed!):
Last Sunday I started the project with the children who were very excited about it. I told them when we are done the pastor wants to display it on the communion table in front of his pulpit for everyone to enjoy. We started it after our lesson for the day and everyone got all the pieces for their character cut out. After class I scored all the lines so we'd be ready to fold and glue this week. I realized that I could score before cutting and speed things up, so I scored the entire kit yesterday using a dead pen (always saving money!) and cut the sheets into sections containing all the parts to one character for ease in handing out. I also shrunk one of the trees to 75% so I could vary the height like in the preview.

I like to re-purpose things to save both money and our landfills, so when I saw the packing material around an electric griddle my daughter got on Black Friday, I thought the texture would be fabulous for the ground in our scene since that part of the world wasn't grassy. I considered if the uneven surface would prevent the elements of the scene from standing properly, but they have square bases so I hope it will be fine after I glue this new surface down tight!

First I tore it and bent it to make the molded packing as flat as I could. I clearly didn't have enough to cover the piece of cardboard I'd cut from the face of the box to be our foundation for the scene. I cut off parts to use as little hills and rises to add interest to the scene.
I got to thinking about paper making. I've seen where they will take paper and put it through a blender with liquid, adding some things and then spread it on screen and dry making new paper. This packing was very thick. I decided to tear it into sections and soak it in hot water to soften it and start breaking down the fibers, hoping it wouldn't loose it's great texture. When it was soft, I separated the layers and tore small pieces that I smooshed together on a cookie sheet. When I'd covered the sheet I put it in my oven at the lowest setting, checking every 8 minutes. I wasn't sure if this would be a fire risk, so I stayed and worked on the scoring right next to the oven, just in case. It wasn't sufficiently dry when I wanted to go to bed, so I took it out and just put it on top the stove for the night. This morning it looked fabulous! It was dry and all my little pieces were now one! Though delicate. (See how the layers separated?)
The cookie sheet wasn't as long as my cardboard, so I covered my cardboard with foil, taping the seams to protect against moisture. I loosened my new "paper" with a spatula and centered it on my now protected cardboard (just in case I couldn't sufficiently "blend" the edges). I needed to add more to it so I wetted the existing edges and added till it was full. It looked better than this when I was done and you can see I still had more of the material left over! Since air drying worked overnight last night, I have just set it on top my stove for now since it's toasty warm up there while I reseason my cast iron skillet (at 500 degrees!).
This is a close up of the cool texture when it's dry! I think it looks very authentic!
With this success I'm thinking I might be able to alter the appearance of my "hills" the same way to blend better into the surface...hmmmm.

I need to attach my new surface to the cardboard backing (foil removed). That's a LOT of surface, so I wonder if ModPodge would be a good idea for this job? I have never used it, but I've read marvelous things about it. There are LOTS of varieties of ModPodge out there and I don't know what to try. If you have a suggestion I'd really appreciate you posting or e-mailing me QUICKLY! :)

That brings us up to today. My class worked on it three weeks (I worked a lot longer) and today we finished! They LOVED it and the grownups are loving it too now that it's sitting up front of the pulpit for all to enjoy. I'm having all the children who worked on it sign the underneath of the "ground" at the Pastor's suggestion (wish I'd thought of it!). I'm thinking of ModPodging all the pieces to help it last for the future. I can see using elements of it to act out many Bible lessons in the future.

ModPodge it worked fine for attaching my "ground" to the base. In the end I didn't like the hills and rises and scrapped them. This is how it looked at our Christmas party without any of the animals being done yet.
This is how it looks today after finishing all the pieces in class.
Update: I thought we were done, but then he gave us the wise men set so...
I love the camels! My "ground" is no longer large enough. You have to choose shepherds or wise men! That's ok. They didn't come at the same time anyway! Some scholars think the wise men didn't arrive till our Lord was two! I don't know, but I do know that all that matters is it's all true and they did come and most importantly - HE came!!! Hallelujah!

If you are thinking of doing this with your children, I can say that 8-13 yr. olds loved it and it was doable. Everyone had fun learning about the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ and we are memorizing Luke 2:1-20, but with all the busyness and excitement, we aren't quite there yet, but they learned all the books of the Bible and the 10 plagues in the last little while, so I couldn't be more proud of them. The process of making this afforded many teaching moments about Father God, our Lord Jesus Christ and how we are to live as His people. Many, many thanks to Martin Didier for making this and giving it to the world! God bless you!

Compliments on my cooking and a Freebie

Here's one to make your day!!!

I just called my husband to dinner. He was working in the next room with the door closed between us. (Garage converted to a recording studio). I never know when he's actually recording, so to get his attention without risking ruining a session, I flash the ceiling light to let him know I need his attention. I told him dinner was ready. He came in laughing and said..."Oh, it's fish!"

Then he laughingly explained...

He had started to smell something that "stunk" (cringe), so he stuck his head in his sweatshirt to see if it was him...no he used deodorant?!? Then he thought it must be his socks, so he took them off and smelled them...nope, not the socks. :( Then he thought it must be the dog...she must have gotten in there and pooped on the floor somewhere! (Are you serious????) So he's on his hands and knees looking under everything sniffing when the light flashed (my signal). As he comes to the door he says it still stinks. Then he opens the door and came into the kitchen, "Oh, it's fish!"

Well ladies, if that doesn't win the all time record for compliments on our cooking I don't know what does!!! LOL! Makes it all worthwhile! LOL!

My gift for you today is a Wintry Paper. I hope you like it. I also want to show you my adorable new kit, Happy Christmas Lights! Free Paper Nativity Figures from My Little House

I told you about this adorable paper model of the nativity that they are giving away at My Little House, well here's my journey making it with my Bible School class.

Thanksgiving Procolamation

This outstanding letter was forwarded to me and I think it's so important that I'm printing it here for all of you and also offering it as a download at the bottom of the post where my freebies always live. (The formatting is messed up and I can't seem to fix it, sorry.) God bless you this Thanksgiving:

"I sat down at the computer to write my yearly short poem for Thanksgiving and would end it with an appropriate scripture, but this year as you can see you are getting my message on your email. Why, because the tradition of celebrating Thanksgiving should perhaps be taken more seriously as the situation in the world is so tenuous. I also wanted to stress that choosing a day to thank God for His blessings seems so inadequate and sometimes insincere. I was reading the history of Thanksgiving in the Federalist Digest and the presidential proclamations of Washington, Lincoln and others and was moved to remind and perhaps enlighten some who have forgotten where and why Thanksgiving Day was started. To those who believe in the separation of church and state this should put your minds at rest or change uninformed views to the truth of our forefather’s declarations, writings and intentions.

The first Thanksgiving Proclamation was issued by the revolutionary Continental Congress on November 1, 1777. Authored by Samuel Adams, it was one sentence of 360 words, which read in part: Forasmuch as it is the indispensable duty of all men to adore the superintending providence of Almighty God; to acknowledge with gratitude their obligation to Him for benefits received…together with penitent confession of their sins, whereby they had forfeited every favor; and their humble and earnest supplications that it may please God through the merits of Jesus Christ, mercifully to set apart Thursday the eighteenth day of December next, for solemn thanksgiving and praise, that with one heart and one voice the good people may express the grateful feeling of their hearts and consecrate themselves to the service of their Divine Benefactor…acknowledging with gratitude their obligations to Him for benefits received…to prosper the means of religion, for the promotion and enlargement of that kingdom which consisteth ‘in righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost.”

Then in Congressional Record, September 25, 1789

“Mr. Boudinot (who was the President of Congress during the American Revolution) said he could not think of letting the congressional session pass over without offering an opportunity to all the citizens of the United States of joining with one voice in returning to Almighty God their sincere thanks for the many blessings He had poured down upon them. This then was passed on to George Washington to sign…

Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me “to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and single favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness’:

Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the Beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted; for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplication to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations, and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our national government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a government of wise, just and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations(especially such as have shown kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally, to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand, at the city of New York, the 3rd day of October, 1789

George Washington

Then from the hand of Abraham Lincoln during internal strife in the United States this proclamation.

The year that is drawing toward its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful years and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the Source from which they come, others have been added which are of so extraordinary a nature that they can not fail to penetrate and soften even the heart, which is habitually insensible to the ever-watchful providence…..

In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign states to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere, except in the theater of military conflict, while that theater has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union.

Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defense have not arrested the plow, the shuttle, or the shop; the ax has enlarged the borders of our settlements and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than theretofore.

Population has steadily increased notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege, and the battlefield, and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom.

No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who while dealing with us in anger for our sins hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently, and gratefully acknowledged, as with one heart and one voice, by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow-citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up ascriptions justly due Him for such singular deliverances and blessings they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners, or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it, as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes, to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility, and union.

Abraham Lincoln (October 3, 1863, passed by an Act of Congress.)

Then Theodore Roosevelt wrote: “No people on earth have more cause to be thankful than ours, and this is said reverently, in no spirit of boastfulness in our own strength, but with the gratitude to the Giver of good who has blessed us.”

I dare say, our young Nation had men who knew where our blessings came from and who bestowed them. They were not afraid of offending and openly proclaimed it for all to hear and strongly suggested to America’s citizens that they should reverently observe a special day of Thanksgiving to their Creator.

As you see “God” taken, or soon taken, from our hallowed buildings, our schools, court houses, national anthems and pledges, graduation speeches, currency and perhaps someday pulpits in our churches, remember how thankful our forefathers were for the freedom to have God among us and his blessings upon us.

As you sit with family and friends before a bountiful table, let these humble words from a friend come to mind. The God who once blessed our Thankful Nation, will also judge a thankless one.

With deepest wishes for a blessed Day of Thanksgiving for you and all Americans. Please say a prayer for our valiant military who serve here and in distant lands, making sure we enjoy this God Given Country.

Proud and Very Thankful American,

Jane Canaday"

Princess Coloring Pages

Last night my husband and I were opening the church building (rented portion of an old funeral home) to get ready for the second night of our conference. Once the outside door closed behind us, it was pitch black. I'd gotten half way across the sanctuary toward the light switches that are in the hall on the far side of the room when the door shut and we were engulfed in black. (Who thought to put them there?) I thought, "I'm half way there, I think I can keep walking straight enough to find the door to the hall and then the lights just on the other side."

I took small steps with my arms outstretched so as not to get hurt when I finally touched something. I was expecting my first contact to be the wall next to the door jam. When I could finally touch something, it wasn't the wall. It was waaaay off to the left before even the speakers. If I had deliberately turned 45 degrees to the left when the lights went off, aiming for the left wall of the huge room (instead of straight ahead), where I wound up would have been closer to the goal! Quite a shocker.

God showed me something. I was well established "on the right path" and was "half way there", "focusing on the right goal", "every intent of my heart was to reach that goal with no other thought" when I was engulfed with darkness. Without light, I utterly lost my way and utterly missed the goal.

As Christians, even if we are well grounded in the Word of God and are well along the straight and narrow path home to our Father in Heaven, focusing on Jesus and the goal of eternity in heaven with no other intent in our hearts or thoughts, if we neglect regular Bible study time, personal time alone with God and corporate worship, we are absently mindedly turning off our light, our beacon home and before we know it, we are walking in darkness, pretty sure that we can get to the goal by memory of the last time we saw the goal, by past relationship, past experience. If we don't turn that light back on in time, in shock we will find too late that we have missed the goal entirely and all those years of faithful walking will be useless, because we let our lamps go out in the most crucial final stretch.

  • "It is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved." Matthew 10:22
  • "The foolish (virgin) said to the prudent, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.' But the prudent answered, 'No, there will not be enough for us and you too; go instead to the dealers and buy some for yourselves.' And while they were going away to make the purchase, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding feast; and the door was shut. Later the other virgins also came, saying, 'Lord, lord, open up for us.' But he answered, 'Truly I say to you, I do not know you.' Be on the alert then, for you do not know the day nor the hour." Matthew 25:1-13
