In Acts 5, Ananias, with his wife Sapphira sold property and gave money from it's sale to the church. Peter told them they had lied to the Holy Spirit and would die, and they did. This is a hard passage for many. Some thoughts:

  • Until they gave the money to Peter for the church, it belonged to them and was entirely up to them what they did with it.
  • The sin comes in when they portray it as though they are giving ALL the proceeds from the sale to the church, when in truth they were not. Lies.
  • They were physically handing the gift to Peter, but were in effect lying to the Holy Spirit of God who cannot be deceived.
  • Judgment and punishment were swift.
  • These were new babes in Christ, possibly only 7 weeks or so and still they lied to God, did not fulfill their commitment to God and died for the lie.
  • The result was that reverential fear and awe filled the church, a new awareness of how we must think and act toward God.
Thoughts about some of today's applications:
  • How many of us give our lives to God, become Christians by repenting and committing to live the rest of our lives loving and obeying Him, only to take our lives back and live as we wish? Those who do this, like Ananias and Sapphira, made a promise to Him and then didn't keep it which means that these also are lying to the Holy Spirit of God, punishable by instant death.
  • Let's not misunderstand the delay in God's executing judgment to mean it no longer matters. His delay is in truth patience to allow as many to repent and come to Him as will. It is patience as an act of love. It in no way means the rules have changed. The penalty has not changed. God is not mocked.
"Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap." Galatians 6:7
