Again I want to remind you of the children's game of telephone. One child whispers a message to the child next to them and it get's passed around the room. The last child shares what they were told and compared to what the first child said, there is a lot of variation. It's a funny game, but not good in matters of importance. We wouldn't want our national leaders playing this game with decisions of importance. Surely our eternal destinations are too important to allow this principle, so those who want to be sure to be most pleasing to our Lord, with the Day of Judgment in mind, look to the first century Christian church for our example of all things He wanted in His church. Those who were in charge of the first century Christian church had sat at His feet and heard His instructions personally. All matters should be checked with this example as we seek what's of God and what's of man.

Let's use that example to test things we may believe are how church must be, simply because that's how it was when we were little or how our grandparents did it. I'm NOT saying that everything I'm listing is WRONG and offensive to God, only that they are not God's commands and so are not binding on Christians and any who think these are a MUST should re-examine the scriptures. These are NOT necessary to "have church" according to God Himself:

  1. The idea there is something special about the building itself is not in the New Testament. They met from house to house, along rivers, in catacombs, wherever they could. The "church" is the people of God, not a building.
  2. The order of when things are done in a service is not in the New Testament. It is man made. The Bible gives us a list of things that were done in worship services when they gathered together, but no order they had to be done in.
  3. Stained glass windows are not in the New Testament. Man added them to "improve" God's original Christian churches.
  4. Statues (of apostles, Mary, Jesus, etc.) - not in the New Testament. Man added them to "improve" God's original Christian churches. There is a lot of teaching in the Bible against such for God's people.
  5. Steeples atop church buildings are not in the New Testament. Man added them to "improve" God's original Christian churches.
  6. Church bells - not in the New Testament. Man added them to "improve" God's original Christian churches.
  7. Organs - not in the New Testament. Man added them to "improve" God's original Christian churches.
  8. Pianos - not in the New Testament. Man added them to "improve" God's original Christian churches.
  9. Choirs that sing while the assembly listens - not in the New Testament. Man added them to "improve" God's original Christian churches.
  10. Robes for preachers and/or choirs - not in the New Testament. Man added them to "improve" God's original Christian churches. There is actually teaching against elevating one Christian over another and how our goal is to be least of all and servant of all and to avoid pride and arrogance at all costs.
  11. Silver or gold offering plates and communion trays - not in the New Testament. Man added them to "improve" God's original Christian churches.
  12. That we must spend a fortune of God's money on a fancy church building "to honor Him". That is NOT GOD. Remember, He was fine with no trappings at all, meeting from home to home, along rivers, in catacombs, etc. He commanded His money to be used to further the gospel, to save souls, not to make opulent palaces where Christians can dress up and come fall asleep during sermons! We are accountable for how we use His money - that should makes us tremble!
The next time you hear someone trying to impose on another what MUST BE in a Christian church and HOW it MUST BE DONE, check your Bible and see what God Almighty says about HIS CHURCH. I pray every Christian is clear on the fact that once we gave our lives to God, our answer to Him is ALWAYS "YES" no matter what we previously thought or wanted. It's not about us, it's ALL about HIM! To God be the glory forever and ever, AMEN!
