Jasmine and a Freebie

I've fallen and I can't get up.

We all know the commercial that made that phrase famous, but there are other ways it can be true than just physically.

As Christians we are not called to warm church pews, we are called to be spiritual warriors in His army, missionaries to the lost and ambassadors of Christ in our every day lives, right where we are. He tells us that we are not our own any more, we have been bought with a price, His very life. Now it is to be that He lives through us and not we ourselves living to please ourselves.

Those of us who are truly committed to serving our God and King pour our very souls out to others in His service continually. In our zeal, over time, it is possible to exhaust ourselves to the point of burnout. We don't stop believing. We don't stop obeying. But our relationship with the One we serve suffers because we have poured all we have into serving Him and not enough into BEING WITH HIM. We have spent all we have in giving to others in His name and have not found spiritual nourishment for ourselves.

Depending on how long this has gone on, the symptoms vary from simply being tired and discouraged to becoming emotionally numb and feeling estranged from God, disconnected from all things God. You can loose your hope and enthusiasm. You can fall into a deep, dark depression, feeling unable to connect with God at all. There are many "not good" things that can happen inside us and all the more confusing as we were serving Him with all our what's going on and how do we find our way back to that intimate love relationship with Him?

First it's important to remember that He's promised:

  • "for He Himself has said, 'I WILL NEVER DESERT YOU, NOR WILL I EVER FORSAKE YOU,' so that we confidently say, 'THE LORD IS MY HELPER, I WILL NOT BE AFRAID. WHAT WILL MAN DO TO ME?' Hebrews 13:5, 6
  • "I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Matthew 28:20
We are not to live by how we "feel", but by belief in the Word of God, all of it! He says He's with you, so HE IS! The only way He says He'll leave is if we willfully turn our backs on Him and leave Him. That isn't the case as you've just been serving Him with all your heart! So He's still with you!! CHOOSE to believe what He says over what you FEEL.
  • "A bruised reed He will not break, and a dimly burning wick He will not extinguish; He will faithfully bring forth justice." Isaiah 42:3

The next comment I got from here. I hope it helps:

  • "Jesus replied, ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.” Matt 22:37-40 (see also Deut 6:5 and Lev 19:18)
What is missing is biblical balance. We need all three, not just our fav one. We can only really perform well in our lives when we love God AND ALSO love others AND ALSO love ourselves. All three (God, others, self) are needed to function in a balanced way as a human being. The Bible says so!

Some problems are healed by loving yourself enough to have boundaries to protect (take care of) yourself. (end quote)

That's an easy one to miss - taking care of ourselves. In our zeal for our beloved God, we deplete ourselves to a serious degree. We are, after all, still limited by flesh!

It's kind of ironic - most Christians just "get saved" and warm a bench, never growing, never serving, never developing that amazing love relationship with their God and having their lives truly transformed. Then there's a small group who serve so passionately, so long, that they may burn out! But there is always a way back for those who choose to seek it.
  • Consider temporarily withdrawing from your overly demanding "service" schedule for a time of refreshing and seeking God's refilling and healing. Anything you do now will be in the flesh anyway so, it's useless.
  • Choose to seek God with whatever is left in you, but calmly, in faith, not fear. Remember, He sees your heart and that is still His.
  • Choose to not be discouraged if you can't hear from Him. Be faithful.
  • Choose to be quiet (still in spirit) and trust that the God sees what's going on. He knew it was coming. The Good Shepherd will seek the sheep who is in peril and will carry you safely back to the fold.
  • Choose to remember that His grace is sufficient and isn't affected by how we "feel".
  • Choose to remember that our salvation is by grace and not by works, so your salvation is secure. Our works are a result of our salvation, not a way to "earn" it.
  • Choose to eat healthily, drink plenty of water, get adequate rest and force yourself to get some exercise. This is hard when we feel this way, but exercise makes us feel better and can help break us out of this cruddy place and get us back in touch with life and our first love.
  • Choose to pray. Don't be concerned that they aren't what they once were, He has promised to meet us where we are.
  • Consider fasting but be aware that those with certain health issues need to do so carefully so they don't make things even worse.
  • Choose not to give in to apathy and hopelessness telling you it's ok not to gather with the brethren for worship and fellowship outside the assembly. That's the devil's plan to pick you off! Just go worship. You don't have to be the one heading things up. You don't even have to be one of the workers right now. Just go and choose to meditate on His worthiness and faithfulness, no matter what how you feel or what your situation is.
  • Realize that you are more vulnerable to satan's plans right now and be spiritually cautious.
  • Choose to make changes where He shows you.
You see, you can choose to wallow in this horrid place. You can choose to give up. Or you can choose to stand on the Word of God and know that in His time, He will do all that is needed and you will once again be able to dance in the fields with your Beloved, seeing the love shining from His face and being able to feel His arms about you!
  • "But the one who endures to the end, he will be saved." Matthew 24:13
It's all YOUR CHOICE! No matter how you "feel", He is still faithful and even though we don't understand everything, He WILL KEEP HIS PROMISES! Ours is only to choose to believe and submit. Remember, this is a FIGHT! He never told us it would be easy!
  • "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith; in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing." 2 Timothy 4:7, 8
