In our need to find the right attitude toward God, let us consider something. The New Testament tells us that the Old Testament is to be our "schoolmaster" and tutor us about God. The Bible says He is the same yesterday, today and forever and in Him there is no shadow of changing. So, whatever He shows us about Himself in the OT is still true today, only we no longer live under the OT as Jesus completed it and nailed it to the cross.

Consider that God told His people exactly how He wanted things. He established all the sacrifices to teach them (and us) about sin and holiness and our need for forgiveness. It was a powerful way to teach that sin is abhorrent and can only be atoned for at the greatest price - blood, the very life of one.

Animals for sacrifice to God for forgiveness of sin (a foreshadowing of Jesus Christ, the perfect, sinless sacrifice for all time, which is why we no longer need to sacrifice animals), had to be the very best, the most perfect, or they weren't worthy.

Here's the point I wish to make. There was a sacrifice on the altar to God every moment of every day! There was morning and evening sacrifices every day of the year at 6am and 6pm. (And additional sacrifices at other times). The sacrifice stayed on the altar until the next sacrifice. There was always a sacrifice on the altar to God. In the Christian dispensation, our sacrifices are not animals, but ourselves, our service, our finances, everything we are and have. We need to not only once offer ourselves humbly and completely as a sacrifice to Almighty God our Father, but we must be sure that we don't then get up off the alter and live as we wish. We must "crucify the flesh daily" as Paul said and rebuke our fleshly desires and consciously STAY ON THE ALTAR OF GOD.
