Part of the reason that people disrespect and disobey God's commands on how we should live is that for generations now the American church has taught only that God is love. His is indeed love. He doesn't "have love", he "is love". But He is MUCH more and it is a fatal error not to learn this and live accordingly.

First we must understand that even though different parts of who God is are featured in the Old and then the New Testaments, He is the same God. He never changes.

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." Hebrews 13:8

Just because He does not instantly execute judgment on people today does not mean that He isn't serious about the commands He has given us and has carefully told us what the consequence of disobedience will be. He will fulfill His word. In the Old Testament, judgment was swift to teach the people to revere and obey Him. In the New Covenant we have the benefit of all the Old Testament history to teach us this. He leaves it up to us now whether to obey or reap the consequences of our choices for eternity. Every one of us has a Bible in our home, or did and have gotten rid of it. We are without excuse.

Read all of Numbers 16 for one example of God executing just judgment on His people. As background, remember that when God told Moses how to build His tabernacle, who was to serve in it and how to cleanse and ordain the objects and people, He chose the sons of Levi for this. He further divided the actual labor between those people. Among those divisions was the honor of actually transporting the "most holy things" of the tabernacle from place to place as God lead them through their 40 years in the wilderness. This honor was given to Kohath and his sons.

God had brought the people to the border of the promised land. The sent spys into the land. All but two said they could not take the land. Two believed God and said they could. As a result, all the people 20 yrs. and older were granted their wish, they would indeed die in the wilderness over the next 40 yrs. and only their children would enter the promised land. They repented and said they'd go fight for the land and Moses said not to because God would not be with them now. They went anyway, still not learning to obey, and they were defeated.

Having just gone through all of that, Korah, a son of Kohath, started a revolt because he felt Moses and Aaron were exalting themselves. Korah was already one of those honored to carry the most holy things on his shoulders and still he rebelled against God's choice of leaders. Because Korah and 250 renoun leaders of the congregation confronted Moses with this, God was so angered that He was going to destroy everyone except Moses and make a nation from him (just like He wanted to do after giving them the 10 commandments while they were worshiping a golden calf). Once again Moses interceeded that God not to destroy the innocent with the guilty. Fire came from God in front the the tent of meeting and consumed those 250 and the earth opened and swallowed the entire households of Korah, Dathan and Abiram who spearheaded the rebellion and closed after them.

The very next day the rest of the people grumbled against Moses and Aaron blaming them for this. (Seems they had learned nothing.)

God told Moses and Aaron, "Get away from among this congregation, that I may consume them instantly." Numbers 16:45

Moses sent Aaron to hastily get fire from the altar and told him to offer incense to God in atonement for the people for the plague had begun. Aaron stood between the dead and the living making atonement for them and the plague was checked...but already 14,700 people were dead.

This is just two days of examples. God is love, but He has righteous wrath that He will execute on all those who defy Him. He is God and has that right. All power is His, so He gets to set and enforce the rules. Clearly God says what He means and He enforces what He says, whether immediately as then or with great patience as in the present day. It is grave error to mistake His patience and long-suffering toward us as no longer enforcing His commands. 2 Peter 3:9 We will all stand accountable for our choices - obedience and repentance or disobedience and rebellion. As I look at my beloved country, it breaks my heart to say that I see the latter. If this country is to survive, we must repent with all our hearts and return to God. Otherwise there is no hope.

"The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance." 2 Peter 3:9
