1"When you go out to battle against your enemies and see horses and chariots and people more numerous than you, do not be afraid of them; for the LORD your God, who brought you up from the land of Egypt, is with you.

2"When you are approaching the battle, the priest shall come near and speak to the people.

3"He shall say to them, 'Hear, O Israel, you are approaching the battle against your enemies today. Do not be fainthearted. Do not be afraid, or panic, or tremble before them,

4for the LORD your God is the one who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.'" Deuteronomy 20:1-4

This is a fantastic promise God has given His people, but it only applies to those who truly belong to Him, who have repented of their sins, taken Jesus Christ as their Savior, committed to love and obey Him always, have been immersed in water baptism in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit and are living faithfully. We can fool others at church, but God knows our every thought and intention and He cannot be fooled. We can claim this mighty promise only when we are in right relationship with Him - and then, wow! What a mighty promise! We need not be afraid for it is He who goes before us to defeat our enemies!!!!

In the "spirit filled" area of Christianity, there are those who say they are prophets. When what they say does not come to pass, they say that they have a good "percentage" of being correct so it doesn't matter that they aren't always right. This is what God said in regard to prophets and how He charged His people to handle the issue:

"'But the prophet who speaks a word presumptuously in My name which I have not commanded him to speak, or which he speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.' "You may say in your heart, 'How will we know the word which the LORD has not spoken?' "When a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the thing does not come about or come true, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken The prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him." Deuteronomy 18:20-22

He didn't say that they put on a pretty good show and attendance and the offering was up because their visit was advertised, so it doesn't really matter that they spoke from flesh and not from God, even though they say they did. He takes this very seriously as you read above. He also commands us to study our Bibles (God's Word) daily to see if what we are being told is so. You won't find a single example in the Bible where a prophet came to a group of people and every "word" they gave individuals was all for their own fame, wealth and a huge ministry of their own, yet that's what I hear every time. Self, greed, pride, not humility and service to the Most High God. It's time that God's word is used to guide our thoughts, choices and actions.

9"When you enter the land which the LORD your God gives you, you shall not learn to imitate the detestable things of those nations.

10"There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, one who uses divination, one who practices witchcraft, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer,

11or one who casts a spell, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead.

Prosperity message - look what God commanded for the KING. How do you think that translates to His preachers and regular Christians? We see what He warns against in the entertainment industry daily.

14"When you enter the land which the LORD your God gives you, and you possess it and live in it, and you say, 'I will set a king over me like all the nations who are around me,'

15you shall surely set a king over you whom the LORD your God chooses, one from among your countrymen you shall set as king over yourselves; you may not put a foreigner over yourselves who is not your countryman.

16"Moreover, he shall not multiply horses for himself, nor shall he cause the people to return to Egypt to multiply horses, since the LORD has said to you, 'You shall never again return that way.'

17"He shall not multiply wives for himself, or else his heart will turn away; nor shall he greatly increase silver and gold for himself.

18"Now it shall come about when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, he shall write for himself a copy of this law on a scroll in the presence of the Levitical priests.

19"It shall be with him and he shall read it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the LORD his God, by carefully observing all the words of this law and these statutes,

20that his heart may not be lifted up above his countrymen and that he may not turn aside from the commandment, to the right or the left, so that he and his sons may continue long in his kingdom in the midst of Israel." Deuteronomy 17:14-20

4and if it is told you and you have heard of it, then you shall inquire thoroughly. Behold, if it is true and the thing certain that this detestable thing has been done in Israel,

As the Israelites were about to enter the promised land to posses it, Moses charges them one last time with God's commands on all things:

"These are the statutes and the judgments which you shall carefully observe in the land which the LORD, the God of your fathers, has given you to possess as long as you live on the earth.

2"You shall utterly destroy all the places where the nations whom you shall dispossess serve their gods, on the high mountains and on the hills and under every green tree.

3"You shall tear down their altars and smash their sacred pillars and burn their Asherim with fire, and you shall cut down the engraved images of their gods and obliterate their name from that place." Deuteronomy 12:1-3

"When the LORD your God cuts off before you the nations which you are going in to dispossess, and you dispossess them and dwell in their land, beware that you are not ensnared to follow them, after they are destroyed before you, and that you do not inquire after their gods, saying, 'How do these nations serve their gods, that I also may do likewise?'" Deuteronomy 12:29-30 (Note how the rich and famous so often run after the gods of the orient and India.)

  • He did not say to embrace the worship of false gods so there would be "peace and religious unity".
  • He did not say to embrace the worship of false gods because religious "diversity" was a good thing.
  • He did not say to embrace the worship of false gods because it was "politically correct".
  • He did not say to embrace the worship of false gods to "respect" their religious practices.
  • He did not say to embrace the worship of false gods to "tolerate" their religious practices.
  • He did not say to embrace the worship of false gods because it was the "loving" thing to do.
  • He did not say to just ignore the worship of false gods and let each do what was right in his own eyes.
  • He did not say to carefully preserve as much of the "things" and teachings of worshiping false gods for the sake of racial history, archeology, education, national history and pride, cultural "flavor", etc.
He said to utterly destroy every trace of the worship of false gods so it not be allowed to pollute His people with it's sin and draw them away from Him to destruction.

"If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you and gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or the wonder comes true, concerning which he spoke to you, saying, 'Let us go after other gods (whom you have not known) and let us serve them,' you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams; for the LORD your God is testing you to find out if you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

"You shall follow the LORD your God and fear Him; and you shall keep His commandments, listen to His voice, serve Him, and cling to Him.

"But that prophet or that dreamer of dreams shall be put to death, because he has counseled rebellion against the LORD your God who brought you from the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of slavery, to seduce you from the way in which the LORD your God commanded you to walk So you shall purge the evil from among you."

"If your brother, your mother's son, or your son or daughter, or the wife you cherish, or your friend who is as your own soul, entice you secretly, saying, 'Let us go and serve other gods' (whom neither you nor your fathers have known, of the gods of the peoples who are around you, near you or far from you, from one end of the earth to the other end), you shall not yield to him or listen to him; and your eye shall not pity him, nor shall you spare or conceal him. But you shall surely kill him; your hand shall be first against him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people. So you shall stone him to death because he has sought to seduce you from the LORD your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

Then all Israel will hear and be afraid, and will never again do such a wicked thing among you.

"If you hear in one of your cities, which the LORD your God is giving you to live in, anyone saying that some worthless men have gone out from among you and have seduced the inhabitants of their city, saying, 'Let us go and serve other gods' (whom you have not known), then you shall investigate and search out and inquire thoroughly. If it is true and the matter established that this abomination has been done among you, you shall surely strike the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying it and all that is in it and its cattle with the edge of the sword. Then you shall gather all its booty into the middle of its open square and burn the city and all its booty with fire as a whole burnt offering to the LORD your God; and it shall be a ruin forever. It shall never be rebuilt. Nothing from that which is put under the ban shall cling to your hand, in order that the LORD may turn from His burning anger and show mercy to you, and have compassion on you and make you increase, just as He has sworn to your fathers, if you will listen to the voice of the LORD your God, keeping all His commandments which I am commanding you today, and doing what is right in the sight of the LORD your God. Deuteronomy 13:1-18

I have received an e-mail asking for more information about Biblegateway.com and the program I'm using to read through the Bible this year. It’s so encouraging to know that you you are actually reading the posts! It means a lot to hear from you! Thank you!!

The actual place I’m reading from is a wonderful program at:
http://www.ewordtoday.com/year/
That’s where I chose my chronological Bible plan and which translation. When you’ve done that it takes you to a page that lets you choose when you begin and that sets what date is by each day’s reading. It offers the first of every month, so now would be a great time to start!!! I know that it’s a huge discouragement for me when I miss a day and fall behind schedule, so even though it was January when I started, I chose to select February 1 to give me a headstart. Then each time I have a few extra minutes I read ahead to give myself the flexibility to miss a day now and then and still not fall behind. I’m currently a month ahead of the actual current date. I know it’s all cerebral, but knowing myself and that it would discourage me to fall behind, I chose to do it this way and it’s really taken ALL the stress out of it!! After selecting your start date you are taken to a page you are to bookmark so you can easily return daily and each time you travel a day’s link it changes color so it’s so easy to know where to start each day. The dates are listed for each reading too, but I like to read ahead and the links’ color helps me keep my place effortlessly. So what does this have to do with Biblegateway? When you click each day’s link it takes you to that reading in Biblegateway! :)

You asked what to look at once at Biblegateway - well, separate from your daily reading, in the left column you have many things you can do such as customize Biblegateway.com to always appear in your choice of language, translations, font size, hide or show footnotes and cross-references and Jesus' words in red.

The two options in the left column that I use most are:

  • Passage Lookup – when you know what book, chapter and verse you want to read.
  • Keyword Lookup – when you know some words of your passage, but not where it is. It allows you to tell it what books of the Bible to look in which saves a lot of time in scanning the results to find your scripture. I often will say just the Old Testament or just the New Testament, but sometimes the entire Bible, also sometimes I know the actual book, but not the chapter and verse so I only search that book. You can even choose to search in multiple translations at the same time! Whole words or exact phrases. Many choices!
Once you get your search results they will be in the translation you chose, but you can then change to any other translation you want. This really helps when you simply aren’t finding what you are looking for. Often switching to King James translation will help you find your passage, then you can quickly switch back to the translation you want to read it in.

Biblegateway.com has reading plans where they will actually e-mail you daily! But I prefer the way I’m doing it.

They have a way that you can do all this on your phone if you have one that can do it.

They provide the daily Bible verse on my blog and I am always soooo impressed with their choices. I use Biblegateway every time I post. It saves me tons of time in providing the scriptures for each post. LOL wish I’d know about it when I started the blog, but I’ve used it for years now and GOD BLESS BIBLEGATEWAY!!!! I use it in the lessons I make to teach my class too!

Hope that helped, now go check it out! :)

God told Moses to go up the mountain to see the promised land and then he would be gathered to his people, so he gathered all the Israelites together and again told them all that God had commanded Him to instruct the people to live by, then he says this which is just as vital for us today:

Deuteronomy 6 Obey God and Prosper

1"Now this is the commandment, the statutes and the judgments which the LORD your God has commanded me to teach you, that you might do them in the land where you are going over to possess it,

2so that you and your son and your grandson might fear the LORD your God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be prolonged.

3"O Israel, you should listen and be careful to do it, that it may be well with you and that you may multiply greatly, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has promised you, in a land flowing with milk and honey.

4"Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one!

5"You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

6"These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart.

7"You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.

8"You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead.

9"You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

10"Then it shall come about when the LORD your God brings you into the land which He swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you, great and splendid cities which you did not build,

11and houses full of all good things which you did not fill, and hewn cisterns which you did not dig, vineyards and olive trees which you did not plant, and you eat and are satisfied,

12then watch yourself, that you do not forget the LORD who brought you from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

13"You shall fear only the LORD your God; and you shall worship Him and swear by His name.

14"You shall not follow other gods, any of the gods of the peoples who surround you,

15for the LORD your God in the midst of you is a jealous God; otherwise the anger of the LORD your God will be kindled against you, and He will wipe you off the face of the earth.

16"You shall not put the LORD your God to the test, as you tested Him at Massah.

17"You should diligently keep the commandments of the LORD your God, and His testimonies and His statutes which He has commanded you.

18"You shall do what is right and good in the sight of the LORD, that it may be well with you and that you may go in and possess the good land which the LORD swore to give your fathers,

19by driving out all your enemies from before you, as the LORD has spoken.

20"When your son asks you in time to come, saying, 'What do the testimonies and the statutes and the judgments mean which the LORD our God commanded you?'

21then you shall say to your son, 'We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt, and the LORD brought us from Egypt with a mighty hand.

22'Moreover, the LORD showed great and distressing signs and wonders before our eyes against Egypt, Pharaoh and all his household;

23He brought us out from there in order to bring us in, to give us the land which He had sworn to our fathers.'

24"So the LORD commanded us to observe all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God for our good always and for our survival, as it is today.

25"It will be righteousness for us if we are careful to observe all this commandment before the LORD our God, just as He commanded us."

Deuteronomy 8 God's Gracious Dealings

1"All the commandments that I am commanding you today you shall be careful to do, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD swore to give to your forefathers.

2"You shall remember all the way which the LORD your God has led you in the wilderness these forty years, that He might humble you, testing you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not.

3"He humbled you and let you be hungry, and fed you with manna which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that He might make you understand that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the LORD.

4"Your clothing did not wear out on you, nor did your foot swell these forty years.

5"Thus you are to know in your heart that the LORD your God was disciplining you just as a man disciplines his son.

6"Therefore, you shall keep the commandments of the LORD your God, to walk in His ways and to fear Him.

7"For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing forth in valleys and hills;

8a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey;

9a land where you will eat food without scarcity, in which you will not lack anything; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you can dig copper.

10"When you have eaten and are satisfied, you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land which He has given you.

11"Beware that you do not forget the LORD your God by not keeping His commandments and His ordinances and His statutes which I am commanding you today;

12otherwise, when you have eaten and are satisfied, and have built good houses and lived in them,

13and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and gold multiply, and all that you have multiplies,

14then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

15"He led you through the great and terrible wilderness, with its fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty ground where there was no water; He brought water for you out of the rock of flint.

16"In the wilderness He fed you manna which your fathers did not know, that He might humble you and that He might test you, to do good for you in the end.

17"Otherwise, you may say in your heart, 'My power and the strength of my hand made me this wealth.'

18"But you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who is giving you power to make wealth, that He may confirm His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.

19"It shall come about if you ever forget the LORD your God and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, I testify against you today that you will surely perish.

20"Like the nations that the LORD makes to perish before you, so you shall perish; because you would not listen to the voice of the LORD your God."

I want to encourage anyone who had decided to join me in reading through the Bible in a year last January. I have been using www.biblegateway.com and reading through in chronological order this time. I cannot tell you how cool it's been! I've never read it chronologically before and it really is being amazing how well things fit together and how much easier it is to understand the Old Testament. People might think the Bible is chronologically compiled, but it's not and this is being so awesome.

I wish I could convey how fun it's being and how enlightening so everyone could be blessed this way. If you haven't started yet, they offer it starting each month so you can start any time. You can also choose how you want to read through it and in what translation. It only takes minutes each day and is so interesting that I often read ahead. This also allows me to skip a day now and then without falling behind. I love how they have it set up so that each day is a link and when I read it it stays the color of a traveled link so I know at a glance where to start the next day. God bless Biblegateway.com!!! BTW, they also host our verse for the day here on the blog and what awesome choices they share each day! So if you haven't thought you could do it, just go give it a try. It's easy and quick and sooooo rewarding! You can do it! :)

A note to those collecting the Emerald Isle Paper Pack - don't panic that the downloads are out of order, you will get them all I promise! I had them all scheduled to post in order, but then as I end up shuffling things they sometimes get mixed up, but I assure you they are all scheduled to post and you'll have them all. I'm so glad you like them.

Extra thanks to DeltaLady and Biche57 for all the comments - comments mean the world to me. And Biche57, you mentioned a link was invalid - if you read by the download link, it promises to only be active for 24 hrs. due to storage limits. I often leave them longer and there are literally hundreds of freebies on the blog at all times including one for every one of the almost 160 kits for sale. You just have to look for them. If you want the sweet snaps, they are now in the Bunnies 'n' Bows Kit here. Thanks to everyone who posts!!!! And here's the thought for today...

On our way to worship yesterday we passed a breathtaking field - it was all purple! It was a huge field full of tiny purple weeds. It was spectacular!

I've often marveled at the fact that if a flower is difficult to grow, we call it a flower, and if it is effortless to grow, we call it a weed. I challenge anyone to see this field and not think it absolutely gorgeous, and no man planted it, watered it, fertilized it or weeded it! It cost nothing to fill that entire field with luscious purple. Praise the Lord for planting this lovely field for us!
It got me thinking about how we don't value things that come without effort and sacrifice. Yes, one will spend a lottery fortune in a heartbeat and enjoy it, but we just don't truly value what we haven't had to work for and that's why so many lottery fortunes are gone in just a couple of years.

We couldn't value light if there were no darkness to compare it to. We don't truly value a good meal until we have fasted a while. We appreciate good health the most when we have lost it and then regained it. It's our nature.

If we look at God's plan of salvation for mankind, which He planned before He began creating this world, we see this same principle in place. If man had no ability to disobey Him, there would be no value in our obedience - so He made us creatures with free will.

If there were no evil, we couldn't comprehend or appreciate goodness and holiness - hence He allowed evil to enter the world and tempt us.

Without consequences, both good and bad, to our choices, how would we learn what was the good choice to make?

When He freed the Israelites from Egyptian slavery, He allowed them periods of hunger, thirst, boredom with their diet (manna), to show them that He would provide for them, that when He promised to take care of them if they would obey and love Him, He could be trusted. If they never had lack, how could they learn He would take care of them? This happens in our lives too.

How can we learn to rely on Him for our strength if we never ran out of our own strength?

How could we learn that He is wise and will teach us the way we should go if we never failed in setting our own path?

We don't know to seek Him and all He has for us until we see the lack in our lives.

We don't seek a cure until we know we have a disease.

I hope you will read the passage below that Moses spoke to God's people as they were about to enter the promised land. America, we have done this very thing. God gave us this land for the freedom to worship Him as we wished. Not to worship other gods. It was not by our strength that we settled this land, but by His strength that we might serve Him in this world. Yet we have become fat on the abundance of this land and have indeed forgotten that it was He that gave it to us and not we alone. We are filled with pride and arrogance and have not only not humbled ourselves, knowing it was He that gives us all we have, but we have kicked Him out of the land He has given us. We do not obey Him. We no longer fear Him. We do not love and worship Him and serve Him. We use His holy name as a curse word and mock Him in our TV shows, movies and music. We need to immediately repent of our sin and return to Him with our whole hearts that He might save us and our country which He gave us. His promises of provision and protection come with a condition, that we faithfully obey Him. If we break our part of the covenant, He does not have to keep His part. He has been so patient and long-suffering with us, but time is running out. Repent and return to Him with all your hearts that you and our country might be forgiven and saved!
"You shall fear the LORD your God; you shall serve Him and cling to Him. He is your praise and He is your God, who has done these great and awesome things for you which your eyes have seen." Deuteronomy 10:20,21

Deuteronomy 9

1"Hear, O Israel! You are crossing over the Jordan today to go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than you, great cities fortified to heaven,

2a people great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom you know and of whom you have heard it said, 'Who can stand before the sons of Anak?'

3"Know therefore today that it is the LORD your God who is crossing over before you as a consuming fire He will destroy them and He will subdue them before you, so that you may drive them out and destroy them quickly, just as the LORD has spoken to you.

4"Do not say in your heart when the LORD your God has driven them out before you, 'Because of my righteousness the LORD has brought me in to possess this land,' but it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the LORD is dispossessing them before you.

5"It is not for your righteousness or for the uprightness of your heart that you are going to possess their land, but it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the LORD your God is driving them out before you, in order to confirm the oath which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

6"Know, then, it is not because of your righteousness that the LORD your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stubborn people."

Part of the reason that people disrespect and disobey God's commands on how we should live is that for generations now the American church has taught only that God is love. His is indeed love. He doesn't "have love", he "is love". But He is MUCH more and it is a fatal error not to learn this and live accordingly.

First we must understand that even though different parts of who God is are featured in the Old and then the New Testaments, He is the same God. He never changes.

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." Hebrews 13:8

Just because He does not instantly execute judgment on people today does not mean that He isn't serious about the commands He has given us and has carefully told us what the consequence of disobedience will be. He will fulfill His word. In the Old Testament, judgment was swift to teach the people to revere and obey Him. In the New Covenant we have the benefit of all the Old Testament history to teach us this. He leaves it up to us now whether to obey or reap the consequences of our choices for eternity. Every one of us has a Bible in our home, or did and have gotten rid of it. We are without excuse.

Read all of Numbers 16 for one example of God executing just judgment on His people. As background, remember that when God told Moses how to build His tabernacle, who was to serve in it and how to cleanse and ordain the objects and people, He chose the sons of Levi for this. He further divided the actual labor between those people. Among those divisions was the honor of actually transporting the "most holy things" of the tabernacle from place to place as God lead them through their 40 years in the wilderness. This honor was given to Kohath and his sons.

God had brought the people to the border of the promised land. The sent spys into the land. All but two said they could not take the land. Two believed God and said they could. As a result, all the people 20 yrs. and older were granted their wish, they would indeed die in the wilderness over the next 40 yrs. and only their children would enter the promised land. They repented and said they'd go fight for the land and Moses said not to because God would not be with them now. They went anyway, still not learning to obey, and they were defeated.

Having just gone through all of that, Korah, a son of Kohath, started a revolt because he felt Moses and Aaron were exalting themselves. Korah was already one of those honored to carry the most holy things on his shoulders and still he rebelled against God's choice of leaders. Because Korah and 250 renoun leaders of the congregation confronted Moses with this, God was so angered that He was going to destroy everyone except Moses and make a nation from him (just like He wanted to do after giving them the 10 commandments while they were worshiping a golden calf). Once again Moses interceeded that God not to destroy the innocent with the guilty. Fire came from God in front the the tent of meeting and consumed those 250 and the earth opened and swallowed the entire households of Korah, Dathan and Abiram who spearheaded the rebellion and closed after them.

The very next day the rest of the people grumbled against Moses and Aaron blaming them for this. (Seems they had learned nothing.)

God told Moses and Aaron, "Get away from among this congregation, that I may consume them instantly." Numbers 16:45

Moses sent Aaron to hastily get fire from the altar and told him to offer incense to God in atonement for the people for the plague had begun. Aaron stood between the dead and the living making atonement for them and the plague was checked...but already 14,700 people were dead.

This is just two days of examples. God is love, but He has righteous wrath that He will execute on all those who defy Him. He is God and has that right. All power is His, so He gets to set and enforce the rules. Clearly God says what He means and He enforces what He says, whether immediately as then or with great patience as in the present day. It is grave error to mistake His patience and long-suffering toward us as no longer enforcing His commands. 2 Peter 3:9 We will all stand accountable for our choices - obedience and repentance or disobedience and rebellion. As I look at my beloved country, it breaks my heart to say that I see the latter. If this country is to survive, we must repent with all our hearts and return to God. Otherwise there is no hope.

"The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance." 2 Peter 3:9

“And these words which I am commanding you this day shall be [first] in your [own] minds and hearts; [then] You shall whet and sharpen them so as to make them penetrate, and teach and impress them diligently upon the [minds and] hearts of your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down and when you rise up.” Deuteronomy 6: 6-7; Deuteronomy 11:18-21

Saga Of The Traveling Table & Torn Cardboard 1 freebie

Today I'm going to share a big, fun project with you, but first you need a little background to truly appreciate it...LOL or to even understand why anyone would do such a thing!

Just like a 12-step program I have come to realize that my "kitchen/office/Bible class storage and creation area" is out of control and has become unmanageable. Originally my office was in a tiny dark corner of our garage that was converted (tragically without heat or air) before we bought the house. Murky dismal, freezing and a sauna. I worked there 12 and more hours a day for YEARS until termites devoured the walls around me. The astonishingly expensive treatment filled the walls with poison foam, they said - to the top. I don't care how much they say it's safe, it's always 25 years later when everyone has cancer that it hits the news and lawsuits break out. I wasn't willing to sit in the corner of those two walls that many hours a day seven days a week. No. I try to be a good Christian wife, but I said NO!

We have a completely empty upstairs now with the girls long grown and gone, two bedrooms and a bath, but I can't do the stairs. Such a waste. Our only option was to move my office into our little kitchen. Yup! The nice thing is that I'm now in a lovely bay window overlooking our beautiful yard and what ever degree of heat or air we are splurging on I can take advantage of. Among the bad news is that the brilliant sun so messes with working on the computer, especially colors, that I have to block the largest of the three windows with cardboard all the time and all afternoon I have to do the same to the side window the sun is shining through. Looks really lovely - not! LOL This leaves me the stunning view of the side of our outbuilding 2' away and a section of fence! But still it's so much nicer than a dark corner with no windows, heat or air. And what about the heat and air in my kitchen/office...well, the vent is right under my desk and even the heat is icy, so Boo and I are wrapped in a comforter from the waist down through the cold months as it blows on us.

Another drawback is that whereas I had a round table in the bay window and all my cobalt blue and blood red glasses lined up on it in the window looking oh so lovely as the sun shown through them from inside and outside, now the glassware is crammed into a cubby hole and the table fills the middle of the room pressed against the build-it-yourself cabinet on one side. If you need to come to my desk or cabinets next to my desk, or Boo's food, water and bed next to me, you have to shove the table against the sink and cabinets on that side. If you want to get in those cabinets, use the sink or walk through to the converted garage (where Pastor Ken has his recording studio and the only way to get there), you have to shove the table against my desk on this side. And...no, not done yet with the saga of the traveling table, but to do any cooking you have to slide the table out to the side as it's against the cabinet where all my cooking utensils live and that blocks the stove and the entry into the kitchen up against the frig. Ahhhhhh....

No, not quite done yet laying the background for this project....So you know I gave you freebies and Bible lessons every single day for a year and a half, then a year ago in January, I had to slow down my gifts to you as I started teaching all the children at church in one class for all ages. I have shared that the church is very small and doesn't have funds to purchase curriculum and it's up to me to create everything myself. Ok, so the church building is an hour away each direction in another state, so storing supplies there doesn't work. It's all done here...right here in my little "kitchen/office/Bible class storage and creation area".

As I started buying supplies for lessons and activities for each lesson, I got a small cart with plastic drawers from Sam's for $27 and stored the left over supplies in it, nestled into the last surviving couple of inches of open wall in our bedroom. Over time, you guessed it, I way outgrew the little cart. My bedroom floor filled with a bag of construction paper, a bag of empty paper rolls, etc. The clutter is oppressive. I am someone who has a place for everything and everything in it's place!

Over this year of teaching class, my bedroom and kitchen ... yes it spread to the kitchen with the only surface I can work on (that round table). They have become UNMANAGEABLE and UNLIVABLE! There is nowhere to sit anything down. The counter is small and just a few dishes waiting to be washed (no dishwasher) fills it. The table is full of the next lesson I'm working on and the activities I'm making to go along with them, supplies, half done projects that are in progress for future lessons, new posters I've made for class, decorations I plan to change the classroom for spring/summer with, special treats for fellowship meals and such.

When Ken or I have a client, they have to come to the kitchen for my office or through the kitchen to his studio. We no longer have any semblance of professional appearance here and it's EMBARRASSINGLY messy. So...

With my success making the spice shelf submit I turned my attention to this challenge. No, I don't have time to deal with it, but it was no longer an option. I need at least part of my table empty to use! LOL I can't even find a space of table to take tutorial pictures on! I have to Photoshop the table empty around the project!!!!

Now on to the project! (Thanks for hanging in there!) So I surveyed my resources and goals.

  • My goal was to find a way to store things more effectively leaving most of the table available for work and LIFE!
  • Possible space to add storage...nill. Every inch in wall space is used except a few inches next to the window up higher. On the floor under the window I have metal storage for reams of paper that I bought from a closing store. Above them I had a few inches between the window and the make-it-yourself white cabinet I use as a pantry.
  • My resources...$0, of course. LOL
So...time for some creativity! I had to go to Sam's to print my newest class poster about the lineage of Abraham, the 12 Tribes of Israel and a map of Egypt and the Holy Land to help in learning all about the 10 commandments now that we've finished the 10 plagues and have been divinely delivered from slavery. While there I got to thinking, they always save the empty boxes and offer them for us to carry our purchases home in. I don't take them as it would just be more trash and I try not to throw much away - landfills. I started looking for sturdy usable shaped boxes about the width between the window and cabinet. Tada! Turned out that the Energizer battery boxes they had were more perfect than I could imagine. I made three trips to the two Sam's in our area to collect 11 empties.

They have a nice dark exterior and have very interesting parts loose inside. I cut them apart and saved them to use for a weaving project with the children with a future lesson.
In the picture below, the Energizer boxes at the bottom still have their fronts. In the middle you see a box where I cut the front out and the top boxes show where I have slid boxes into each of the new "shelves". To build the tower, I ran a bead of hot glue down the top edges of both sides of the box and pressed another box on top.
I had several empty envelope boxes from when I used to make custom cards. To my delight they slip perfectly into each opening! I knew I saved them for something! I slid them in label end first so they didn't show.
But the edges where I'd cut were very rough and didn't look good. Again, with $0 available for the project, I ended up running masking tape up each side and trimming then folding the tape to the inside and outside to cover the edges. Then I did the same for each "shelf" edge. Not gorgeous, but it does look better in my opinion.

At this point this is how it looks. The top shelf is two boxes high. One box was attached as usual then the last one was inverted and glued edge to edge instead of top edge to bottom of the next one. This gave me a taller area and a solid top to avoid dust. I didn't have enough envelope boxes for every shelf, but the shelves still work great for some items. The white shelves next to the new tower of shelves is another build-it-yourself item that had been discarded by others. I was so tired of reaching for something in it and having an avalanche. I used boxes in some of the shelves to solve that problem (I save all nice boxes for future re-use). On top of it all is my Fiskars trimmer and some larger items that don't fit on a shelf such as large paper shields from Hobby Lobby to be a class project when we study the Armor of God. On top the metal paper holders on the left is a bag of tissue paper I got at a store closing.
So, is this my first choice? Do I think it looks nice? No, but I am very satisfied that I was able to make do with what I had and also keep some things out of the land fill. I hate how crowded and cluttered my home has become because of this, but honored to be entrusted with sharing the Gospel of Christ with children again. My husband for some reason is very concerned that I label each box. I pretty well know where things are for now without it. Some boxes have termite damage on them and I am considering possibly designing something pretty to cover the fronts of the boxes with. Maybe the same for the large white boxes in the big shelves...just to make it look deliberate. Maybe. But for now...I have MOST of my table back!!!!! There is always my green plastic bag for my next week's lessons to deal with. And there's a small pile of plumbing things I bought to try to fix my bathroom sink and have not had the nerve to try yet...and a big bag of napkins because my husband loves napkins and they don't fit anywhere. But I can see table now! I can use most of the table now and I am so happy!

I challenge you to use found items to solve some of your home needs and I'll post any of them that you send me! Maybe we can start something fun AND good for our pocketbooks AND the environment! And it is satisfying. :)

It just seemed fitting after this long project made of re-purposed cardboard boxes - today's gift for you is this torn piece of cardboard! Flavored waters are a big business these days, but they are full of artificial ingredients and some even calories of sugar.

I had the pleasure of having lunch at my daughter's yesterday and she served me such a wonderful, fresh new drink that I thought I'd share it with you. She served a sparkling clear pitcher full of water with beautiful thin slices of cucumbers floating in it! Yes - I said cucumbers! It was so fresh and fun, tasty and surprising! There's something about the scent of cucumbers that always smells clean and happy to me. She sent me home with a cucumber and I set a pitcher of it to chill in my frig right away. I was surprised how quickly it tasted good.

Another fun thing about this refreshing drink was that it was not only a festive presentation, delicious and refreshing, but she had refilled it several times and each batch tasted as good as the first!

I would never have thought of doing this, but she is so creative! She says she's done it with strawberries, blackberries and other things too. So go try this - you won't be sorry! She says it's prettier when you don't peel the cucumbers, but she peeled these to be sure there couldn't be any nut contamination for me. Yes, in the last year I have developed a severe nut allergy and I'm trying to learn how to live with it - without any medical care (no insurance and no money). If any of you have wisdom on this I would greatly appreciate you e-mailing me. lynette@lynettesphotoart.com I looked into foreign on line meds for an Epi-pen as they don't require a prescription (which you can't have if you don't have a doctor), figuring any meds would be better than none, but I read that many of the sites that will sell you meds without a script are really fronts for identity theft. But back to the yummy water - isn't it gorgeous?!! LOL - I'm on the way to the frig for another drink of it! And just FYI, those lovely Oak Leaf Papers I gave you a couple of days ago you can thank her for - they were from her back deck!
My gift to you today is this pretty pink daisy. Enjoy!

"When you become the father of children and children's children and have remained long in the land, and act corruptly, and make an idol in the form of anything, and do that which is evil in the sight of the LORD your God so as to provoke Him to anger,

26I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that you will surely perish quickly from the land where you are going over the Jordan to possess it. You shall not live long on it, but will be utterly destroyed.

27"The LORD will scatter you among the peoples, and you will be left few in number among the nations where the LORD drives you.

28"There you will serve gods, the work of man's hands, wood and stone, which neither see nor hear nor eat nor smell.

29"But from there you will seek the LORD your God, and you will find Him if you search for Him with all your heart and all your soul.

30"When you are in distress and all these things have come upon you, in the latter days you will return to the LORD your God and listen to His voice.

31"For the LORD your God is a compassionate God; He will not fail you nor destroy you nor forget the covenant with your fathers which He swore to them." Deuteronomy 4:25-31

39"Know therefore today, and take it to your heart, that the LORD, He is God in heaven above and on the earth below; there is no other.

40"So you shall keep His statutes and His commandments which I am giving you today, that it may go well with you and with your children after you, and that you may live long on the land which the LORD your God is giving you for all time." Deuteronomy 4:39-40

Today I have this wonderful paper stack with a paperclip for your freebie. I made it from a photo I found on line. I can't wait to use it myself! Enjoy!
