2012 Daily Bible Reading Chart

The 10-12 year old boys in my Bible Class really blessed me a few weeks ago when they excitedly announced they had begun daily Bible reading - ALL BY THEMSELVES! Can you believe that? I asked them who's idea it was first and they said their 15 year old brother! Marvel again! They couldn't wait to each tell me where they were in their reading. I was bowled over!

Obviously I want to do all I can to encourage this MOST worthy endeavor that has life long blessings. As human beings, and BUSY ones at that, I know how hard it can be to stick to something like this. I have often shared here how wonderful it was to read through the Bible last year, CHRONOLOGICALLY for the first time. It's like a new book! For me, having it all in order made such a difference on my understanding and I have loved it so much that I'm still doing it. I use reading programs at http://www.ewordtoday.com/year/ which allow you to pick what you want to read, how and what translation, also when you start. It's fantastic. Hope you try it!

Ok, back to the topic... so, knowing how hard this would be for them, first I offered my phone number for the many difficult words they would encounter and just to help in general. I also offered that they can write the words down and bring them to class if they prefer.

I wasn't surprised Sunday when I asked how they were doing to hear sad boys say they had let it slip. I told them that making ANY new good habit is difficult and takes a lot of effort, not to be discouraged. I recommended they read starting at Matthew instead of Genesis as it's easier. I hadn't said that when they began, because that's where they chose to start and I wanted to be 100% supportive. Again I invited phone calls.

I don't believe in bribery, but this is such a wonderful thing they are wanting to do, that would bless their entire lives, that I sat and brainstormed with my husband last night. This is what we came up with.

A way to keep track of our progress keeps people encouraged. Just like the chart in class for attendance and doing their memory work, they need a chart they can tack up on their bedroom walls at home to keep track of their progress and keep encouraged. I personalized every chart for each child and printed ones with the name blank for any adults who would like to join us. I'm sharing the blank one with all of you today! To keep it cheap, they print in black and white on two 8.5 x 11 pages. You could print it on neon paper to make it more fun. Understanding they are young, have school and also weekly memory work for Bible class, I wanted it to be "doable". The requirement will be to read 5 verses of their choice each day and it can't include their memory work. If they do that, they can mark the box for that day on their chart. The boxes are the perfect size for small stickers or stamps or just check them off.

I will design a poster to prominently displayed in the church. We are a very small fellowship, so I'm thinking right next to the door everyone comes and goes by. I wanted to call it, "Daily Bible Reading Challenge", but my husband says it will be called, "Honor Roll", so people will be motivated to participate and be on it.

The first Sunday of each month, anyone who has marked off at least HALF the days in the month will bring their chart to church and be recognized from the pulpit. It's sad to make it only half the days and only five verses a day, but again, the important thing is to get people into reading daily. The rest is up to them and God. They will also get to add their name to the poster for that month and their names will be printed in an article about the project in the local newspaper each month. (So far, the newspaper will print small articles of special church events for free.) Encourage, encourage, encourage!!!

Feeling that a year is too long for a child...LOL and many adults!...we decided that we would then divide the year into two six month sections. Anyone who had met the daily and monthly requirements for five out of six months of that period would then get to choose any Christian CD they want (that's available) and the church will award it to them in front of the assembly. We chose CDs because this really is about the young people and that's what they want. Most are from families where that is a luxury. It's also a good way to increase how much of their listening time is building up their walks with God.

So, next project is to design the poster.

I hope you will pray with me that God will touch hearts in our little fellowship, that many people, young and old, will participate and our relationships with Him will prosper this year. There is nothing to equal the value of having the Word of God living in you so that the Holy Spirit can bring it to your mind when you need it, whether for your own help or to help another. And there's no way to get the Word inside you other than reading it and hearing it.

How sad when people are satisfied with only the word or two from the Bible they get each week from a sermon. We don't live our lives seeing how little food we can survive on...why do we try to see how little of God's Word we can survive on, how little time spent with Him, how thin a relationship with Him? Remember, He has told us that He demands first place in our lives or we are not worthy to follow after Him. Matthew 10:37 It's something to think about, and pray about. Eggies

Nor can you understand what they say.

They will devour your sons and your daughters;

I was happy to see this product offered as I’m one of the people who’s physical condition makes peeling eggs very difficult and painful. I have learned to NEVER order anything from the TV or their internet site after several horrible experiences. They did a lot more than send me the product and it took months to resolve. So I waited till I could find them locally. I got them at my Bed, Bath & Beyond today and couldn’t wait to try them out as my husband loves hard boiled eggs.

The first negative I encountered was that each egg has FOUR parts. As I washed and dried all four parts for the 12 eggs (2 sets) I’d bought, my drying rack was full of pieces. No – I don’t have a dish washer. LOTS of pieces to clean.

The second negative I encountered was reading that you have to grease the pieces – every use…and you can’t use spray directly on them.

The third negative I encountered was when I went to put my raw egg in an Eggie. Since there is a cooking chart for the different size eggs, you’d expect to be able to put them in the Eggie. No. I buy large eggs. The yoke alone is too large to fit through the opening and made a huge mess. I then opened the Eggies to just the bottom half. One raw egg filled the half to the brim. I could not have added additional ingredients as advertised. I did add some after reassembling the Eggie.

The fourth negative I encountered was that the cooking chart said to cook 15-17 minutes for large eggs and said to start with “warm water”. I started with boiling water and cooked for 17 min. and though they were mostly cooked, they weren’t completely done.

The fifth negative I encountered was that though I washed the mess off the outside of the Eggies that was caused by my eggs being too large to go in, somehow egg still got in my pan and made a horrid mess in the pan to clean up.

The sixth negative I encountered was that even though I carefully greased every part with oil as directed, NOT ONE OF THEM would release from the bottom cup even though I had greased, cooked according to their directions and was squeezing the bottom cup all around as they said. I had to scoop every egg out with a spoon and it left egg stuck to the inside.

The sixth negative I encountered was when I IMMEDIATELY hand washed them. The egg didn’t want to come off the surfaces. It was a LONG job working diligently with washcloth and nylon bristled tool to get all the junk off the Eggies.

The seventh negative was that the bacon bits and seasonings I added through the top to some of the eggs, did not mix in. They stayed in a chunk. I guess you’d have to mix it all up in advance and then pour it into the Eggies.

It was a good idea, but a monumental amount of work and time. Possibly those with dishwashers would fair better, but I think if they didn’t immediately wash them, that egg gunk would be very hard to remove even in a dish washer. All told, it was MUCH MORE demanding of my hands and my time than just doing it the normal way.

We focus only on the fact that at some point after Jesus called Peter to come to Him on the water, Peter's faith grew weak and he began to sink, yet his faith was still strong enough to realize that Jesus could save him and he called out to Him for help. The fact we seem to always ignore is that he DID walk on water. Not one of the rest of us has had the faith to walk on water for even one step - but Peter did. Why would they do that? Did they want to worship Him? The Bible says that in the end, every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. Philippians 2:10 We see here that even the demons do, and they started so long ago. How sad - even the demons of hell know that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and proclaim it with no chance of salvation, but so many human beings, so advanced and modern, don't. Best to understand this before we leave the earth, because we will all proclaim Him Lord in the end, but if we haven't done so here, it will be too late to do us any good.

I recently saw this idea on www.karaspartyideas.com and had to run right out and make one of my own. It is SO absolutely cleaver and the results are amazing! I used a larger glass bowl so I could fill it with cake balls for church fellowships. All told, with a 50% coupon for the cement and regular price for the rest, it cost just under $15 with tax. I can't wait to take it to the next fellowship meal!

Update - I made it quite a while ago planning to fill it with cake pops (without sticks) to look like gumballs. Sadly, the "Christmas Red" in my Wilton colors was shocking pink instead, so we had no red "gumballs", but it was still fun.

Paper Ball Ornaments

I saw this idea on Remodelaholic and made some with my own twist. I used her template to make my own and designed it as I liked in PhotoShop. I like them hung on the diagonal. I frosted the edges in white glitter and used a Martha Steward snowflake punch on white cardstock scraps and glued one to the center of each side. When it was dry, I took a nail file and lifted each tip away from the body to make them dimensional. I printed my one 8.5x11 sheet at Stapes for a dollar and it yielded 6 ornaments. If there is anyone reading who is a praying person, please pray for my daughter Ginger, yes, the one who lost her house in the April tornadoes and just moved back in a week ago. Please pray for her and all those who love her boyfriend, Eric, who has died suddenly this morning. She followed the ambulance and was the one to identify him and sign his paperwork. I would so appreciate your prayers.

Update - when she got home, her front door was broken in and she was robbed. She doesn't even have a front door. They have her laptop with all her on line banking info. Takes a special kind of person to watch the only house in the area that was destroyed by the tornadoes and when the person has rebuilt and moved in a week or so, figure they have all new things and break down their door and rob them six days before Christmas. Paper Poinsettia Ornament

I recently saw a tutorial Melissa Samuels posted for beautiful Paper Poinsettias and have been having fun trying them out. I can't find anything like the gorgeous snowflake centers she used, but am making do with some fake jewels I had and for the tiniest one, a tiny bezel set jewel brad that I cut the prongs off and glued to the centers. I've also opted not to cover the backs with a circle like she did because I think the backs are beautiful. I punched a tiny hole at the top to put a hanger through.

I couldn't find any double sided paper I liked in the stores. I made one with just the white backing showing for the other side and didn't like it, so I cut double of the circles and just held them closely back to back while I made my folds. I like the tiny white edging it leaves and when the edging got too wide, I used my bone folder to poke it back with the other layer and creased it to hold. It's worked perfectly, though it is a bit more work. I did ink the edges though and like the result.

The tiny one I made with 1" circles is so sweet I'm thinking of putting a jump ring in the hanging hole and wearing as a necklace!

We can all make a difference! I don't know who originally sent this story and really don't even care if it is true, but I do know that I am inspired by its message every time I read it.

Two Choices
What would you do?....you make the choice. Don't look for a punch line, there isn't one. Read it anyway. My question is: Would you have made the same choice?
At a fundraising dinner for a school that serves children with learning disabilities, the father of one of the students delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by all who attended. After extolling the school and its dedicated staff, he offered a question:
'When not interfered with by outside influences, everything nature does, is done with perfection.
Yet my son, Shay, cannot learn things as other children do. He cannot understand things as other children do.
Where is the natural order of things in my son?'

The audience was stilled by the query.

The father continued. 'I believe that when a child like Shay, who was mentally and physically disabled comes into the world, an opportunity to realize true human nature presents itself, and it comes in the way other people treat that child.'

Then he told the following story:

Shay and I had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked, 'Do you think they'll let me play?' I knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their team, but as a father I also understood that if my son were allowed to play, it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence to be accepted by others in spite of his handicaps.

I approached one of the boys on the field and asked (not expecting much) if Shay could play. The boy looked around for guidance and said, 'We're losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning. I guess he can be on our team and we'll try to put him in to bat in the ninth inning.'

Shay struggled over to the team's bench and, with a broad smile, put on a team shirt. I watched with a small tear in my eye and warmth in my heart. The boys saw my joy at my son being accepted.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay's team scored a few runs but was still behind by three.
In the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the right field. Even though no hits came his way, he was obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field, grinning from ear to ear as I waved to him from the stands.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay's team scored again.

Now, with two outs and the bases loaded, the potential winning run was on base and Shay was scheduled to be next at bat.

At this juncture, do they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the game?

Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat. Everyone knew that a hit was all but impossible because Shay didn't even know how to hold the bat properly, much less connect with the ball.

However, as Shay stepped up to the
plate, the pitcher, recognizing that the other team was putting winning aside for this moment in Shay's life, moved in a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay could at least make contact.

The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed.

The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards Shay.

As the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher.
The game would now be over.

The pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman.

Shay would have been out and that would have been the end of the game.
Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right over the first baseman's head, out of reach of all team mates.

Everyone from the stands and both teams started yelling, 'Shay, run to first!
Run to first!'
Never in his life had Shay ever run that far, but he made it to first base.
He scampered down the baseline, wide-eyed and startled.
Everyone yelled, 'Run to second, run to second!'
Catching his breath, Shay awkwardly ran towards second, gleaming and struggling to make it to the base.

By the time Shay rounded towards second base, the right fielder had the ball . the smallest guy on their team who now had his first chance to be the hero for his team.
He could have thrown the ball to the second-baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitcher's intentions so he, too, intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third-baseman's head.

Shay ran toward third base deliriously as the runners ahead of him circled the bases toward home.

All were screaming, 'Shay, Shay, Shay, all the Way Shay'

Shay reached third base because the opposing shortstop ran to help him by turning him in the direction of third base, and shouted, 'Run to third!
Shay, run to third!'

As Shay rounded third, the boys from both teams, and the spectators, were on their feet screaming, 'Shay, run home! Run home!'

Shay ran to home, stepped on the plate, and was cheered as the hero who hit the grand slam and won the game for his team

'That day', said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face, 'the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity into this world'.

Shay didn't make it to another summer. He died that winter, having never forgotten being the hero and making me so happy, and coming home and seeing his Mother tearfully embrace her little hero of the day!

AND NOW A LITTLE FOOT NOTE TO THIS STORY:

We all send thousands of jokes through the e-mail without a second thought, but when it comes to sending messages about life choices, people hesitate.

The crude, vulgar, and often obscene pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion about decency is too often suppressed in our schools and workplaces.

If you're thinking about forwarding this message, chances are that you're probably sorting out the people in your address book who aren't the 'appropriate' ones to receive this type of message Well, the person who sent you this believes that we all can make a difference.

We all have thousands of opportunities every single day to help realize the 'natural order of things.'

So many seemingly trivial interactions between two people present us with a choice:

Do we pass along a little spark of love and humanity or do we pass up those opportunities and leave the world a little bit colder in the process?

A wise man once said every society is judged by how it treats it's least fortunate amongst them.
You now have two choices:
1. Delete
2. Forward

Today I'm sharing the easiest ornament ever and it's so much more beautiful in person! You only need two things. I got them both at Hobby Lobby on 50% off sale. I used the tiniest glass ornaments, knowing the filling would have some weight - 1 3/8" that come in a box of 20. I think I paid less than $3. Then I got the clear Diamond Ice - a true wonder of manufacturing - so gorgeous! I think I paid $1.26 a bag on sale and I think I used 2 bags to fill five ornaments. I just filled the ornaments most of the way up with the twinkling treasures and voila!!! And I'll share a secret with you...they are so much fun that I kept a pretty clear glass full of them to just enjoy running my fingers through from time to time! :) Isn't it great being a girl?!!!

Magazine/Old Book Christmas Trees

Recently I shared a couple of trees I made using a tutorial from The House That Lars Built, but I have another to share today and it's adorable too! I used a narrow, rectangular vintage book. I removed the binding and just used the pages. I wrapped a strip of brown paper bag around a glitter tub to make the stump it's standing on. I'm not attaching the "stumps", just setting them on them to look cuter. LOL and now I see I was too eager to grab a shot for you and I didn't get the new one centered! No big deal though since they aren't attached. I love how it turned out! I've been shocked that my husband is still walking around the house talking about the gorgeous sparkle on the first two magazine trees. Not something he's normally into. I used this amazing Diamond Dust from Hobby Lobby. There's none left now. I've tried two stores. But keep your eyes out for it cause it's GAWGIOUS!!!! Folded Paper Christmas Tree Ornament

I saw a great tutorial for these trees on CSI Project and made my own version. I made my trees out of green scrapbooking paper and aged the folded edges with Distress Ink. When the ink dried, I frosted the cut edges with white glitter. I punched a tiny hole inside at the top and threaded my silver hanger string through. I had some gorgeous metal star beads, so I threaded one onto the string, tied my hanger ends together, turned them to the back to be hidden and then made a second knot just above the star to keep it stationary. I think this tree would also be fun using small green brads to attach the sections, so they would have movement. I might make some that are two sided so they are full all the way around. It's time to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper? Everyone -- yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates from your local American hair salon or barber? Gym membership? It's appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some health improvement. Who wouldn't appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, American owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates. Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plonking down the Benjamins on a Chinese made flat-screen?

Perhaps that grateful gift receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the
summer, or driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course. There are a bazillion owner-run restaurants -- all offering gift certificates. And, if your intended isn't the fancy eatery
sort, what about a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint.

Remember, folks this isn't about big National chains -- this is about supporting your home town Americans with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open. How many people couldn't use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle, done at a shop run by the American working guy?

Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would LOVE the services of a local cleaning lady for a day. My computer could use a tune-up, and I KNOW I can find some young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running. OK, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry, and pottery and beautiful wooden boxes.

Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave your server a nice tip. And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at your hometown theatre. Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands.

Honestly, people, do you REALLY need to buy another ten thousand Chinese lights for the house? When you buy a five dollar string of light, about fifty cents stays in the community. If you have those kinds of bucks to burn, leave the mailman, trash guy or babysitter a nice BIG tip.

You see, Christmas is no longer about draining American pockets so that China can build another glittering city. Christmas is now about caring about US, encouraging American small businesses to keep plugging away to follow their dreams. And, when we care about other
Americans, we care about our communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we couldn't imagine. THIS is the new American Christmas tradition.

Forward this to everyone on your mailing list -- post it to discussion groups -- throw up a post on Craigslist in the Rants and Raves section in your city -- send it to the editor of your local paper and radio stations, and TV news departments. This is a revolution of caring about each other, and isn't that what Christmas is about?

For our reindeer eyes, the tut used choc chips, but we had royal icing from the snowmen, so... :)I'd seen a cute idea for making a gumball machine and made it quite a while ago planning to fill it with cake pops (without sticks) to look like gumballs. I don't have the website, but the image was from http://s220.photobucket.com/albums/dd59/kidswallcreations/Party/?action=view&current=GumballParty72dpi-42.jpg. Sadly, the "Christmas Red" in my Wilton colors was shocking pink instead, so we had no red "gumballs", but it was still fun.
On the snowmen, I thinned the royal frosting too much, but when I realized that I had tiny plastic hats from Hobby Lobby for another craft I am doing with the children in my Bible class ... there must have been some magic in that old felt hat I found ... for when I put it on his head ... LOL!!!! Fabulous!!! I adore their little hats melting down their heads!!! Makes up for my "puddles" not surviving due to being too thin. Storage and transportation is a challenge too. We ended up getting new pizza boxes and voila - problem solved! All set to go!

Fabulous Free Christmas Coloring Book!!!

This is a CAN'T MISS gift from Didier Martin, the man who gives us all those fantastic free paper models of the nativity, the resurrection, Bethlehem and so much more. He's made an adorable 8 page book of the true Christmas story. It's available in tract form or coloring book size and is currently available in English, Spanish & French. He's looking for people to translate it further for him to reach the most people. I printed mine at Staples for only 13 cents a sheet and it took only 2 sheets to print the tract size. I used them in Bible class yesterday as I knew I'd have from 3 yrs. to 6th grade or so and we were having our church Christmas party after service, so there would be more children. I read them two Bible accounts of our Lord's birth as they colored and now they each have a book of their own with the story of the Best Christmas Gift ever! Magazine Christmas Tree

I saw the most wonderful tutorial for this tree at TheHouseThatLarsBuilt and just had to make one. I love how she did her's, but I just used what I had on hand. Somehow lately I’ve been getting In Style, an enormous magazine, for free and I can’t get them to stop. They are such a huge waste of paper that I can’t throw them out, even though I don't look at them. Figured I could use the paper for something.

When I saw this tut I grabbed one and tried it. I don’t have the spray paint, so I left them natural. I hot glued the ends together to make it a full tree. I don’t have spray glue so I brushed the edges from the top down with ModPodge and sprinkled it with glitter I got 1/2 off last week (MUCH lovelier in person). I sat it on a little candle (trunk) I have that’s got a lid and a silver snowflake sleeve around it and I love the results. (Candle from Bed Bath & Beyond). It looks so lovely in the sunlight and by the tree. Maybe you try one too. Sooooo easy, but a lengthy job when you use a magazine the size I did!

I see this could be used on a few inches of magazine to make a 3D tree that you could glue the two sides to paper as decoration, or in the center of a card so it opens when you open the card.And of course if one was so pretty, I had to make a second one ... I'm going to use them as table decorations for the church Christmas party. Wouldn't this be great using a vintage book???My freebie for you today is a surprise! Merry Christmas!

God had the prophet Jeremiah command the Rechabites to drink wine, but they refused because an ancestor had commanded the family not to drink wine forever. They would not do it. Then God uses this example to His people, that these faithfully obey the command of an ancestor while God's people won't obey Him, and the punishment for it:

Then you will dwell in the land which I have given to you and to your forefathers; but you have not inclined your ear or listened to Me. ¹⁶ Indeed, the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have observed the command of their father which he commanded them, but this people has not listened to Me.’”’ ¹⁷ Therefore thus says the LORD, the God of hosts, the God of Israel, ‘Behold, I am bringing on Judah and on all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the disaster that I have pronounced against them; because I spoke to them but they did not listen, and I have called them but they did not answer.’” Jeremiah 35:12-17

Christmas Cookies Kit and a freebie

This is a very popular scripture today. We love to cling to it's promise, but do we note the context God gave it to us in? This is the Word of God given to the prophet Jeremiah to God's people as He is telling them He's sending them into 70 years of Babylonian captivity as punishment for their not obeying His laws and worshiping other gods!

"For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope. ¹² Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. ¹³ You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. " Jeremiah 29:11-13

When we hear this quoted today it is "claimed" implying that only things we deem as "good things" are going to happen to us, but God was sending His people into 70 years of captivity in a foreign land! It's so very important that we always read God's Word in context. He's telling them that though He indeed is going to punish them greatly for sinning against Him, that afterward, if they will seek Him with their whole hearts, which means repenting and turning to Him fully as their God, no longer disobeying and worshiping other gods, then He will bless them and return them to their own land. He always has our ultimate good at heart. Punishing us for doing evil is for our good, as it should turn us away from sinning and into life with Him.

Violets is in answer to a request. A fellow scrapper said she scraps 8.5x11" and puts them in page protectors in a standard binder and that is so flexible for her as she adds pages and other momentos. He is condemning the prophets for telling the people "false and foolish" visions and NOT exposing the people's sins which is for helping them to repent and be restored from captivity. They have been "misleading" God's people with "feel good" messages. When your church as a prophet come, what message is he bringing? One that reveals sin unto your restoration, or one that promises riches, fame and and a huge ministry for each person??

Stick Bug freebie

Today I'm sharing another goodie I made with my Babycakes Cake Pop Maker. I had a roll of generic refrigerator biscuits, you know, the kind that comes in a four pack. I cut each biscuit in half and then rolled it in a sugar and cinnamon mixture then popped them into my Babycakes and four minutes later - voila! And does the house smell yummy!
The other three cans of biscuits I used in the Babycakes last week, but I forgot to take pictures so I hadn't posted about it. I wrapped each half biscuit around a piece of cooked sausage and cooked them in the Babycakes - wow! My husband is in LOVE with them!

Yesterday I shared a tutorial for a very cool cake made using the Babycakes Cakepop Maker. Today I'm sharing my first few tries using the Babycakes Cupcake/Pie Maker.

Reading the reviews, everyone says they don't heat evenly - to check doneness of every cupcake, so I wasn't surprised to find it true. Here I followed their directions for two crust pies from ready made pie crust. I filled them with mincemeat (a fav of my husband - but I won't touch it - yech!). I cooked the allotted time from their directions and none looked done. I kept cooking a lot longer checking every 2 min. In the end I simply couldn't let them cook longer or the edges would have burnt, but still only three were done on top. There was some filling oozing out between the bottoms and tops and it oozed out of the tops of two baby pies too. But it doesn't matter to him - he's enjoying them. I am a bit disappointed.Then I tried making just crust shells for custards and such. First I tried it following their instructions. I had envisioned perfect little pie crusts like those you can purchase, only better because I could make the myself at home. I was sorely disappointed. They were not at all attractive or uniform.

I tried the rest of them using the Babycakes cutter and then forming them in the machine by hand. I got somewhat better results, but still FAR from the adorable store bought ones. I went ahead and filled them with coconut cream pie filling (requested by a brother at church) and topped them with toasted coconut. They looked better with the topping, but they were still very poorly shaped and very un-uniform. :( But, like all the other goodies, they disappeared quickly, so all was not lost. Babycakes Awesome Cake Tutorial

I have made cake pops for church fellowships and haven't been completely happy with their roundness, so I have been wanting to try the Babycakes Cakepop Maker ever since I heard of one. Between a great sale at Kohl's, a 30% coupon and some Kohl's cash, I actually came home with not only a cakepop maker, but also their mini cupcake/pie maker for about half the regular price of the cheaper of the two!!! Tomorrow I'll share about the cupcake maker.

I wasn't sure how you could make the cakepops I'd been making in the Babycakes and after reading the manual, I found out you can't. But...you can make 100% cake balls in it. I thought it was worth a try. So, I've been practicing and looking for more ways to use these Babycakes.

I saw this idea done in a bundt pan on a blog recently (I don't know which blog - write me if it's yours and I'll link to you) and it kept fascinating me until I made my own this weekend for a fellowship meal at church. Man did it disappear fast!

First, reviews on line will tell you quickly that many have had poor results using cake recipes other than Babycakes' own recipes. My first attempt used their white cake recipe. I found it dry and tasteless. Some said that using one of the small cake mixes from the store would work, but my store didn't have any, so, for this cake I used the Dinette Cake recipe I've used all my life from the first cookbook I got. I chose this as it is a small cake - and it tastes wonderful!

Dinette Cake
1 1/4 cups all purpose flour
1 cup sugar
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
3/4 cup milk
1/3 cup shortening
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla

Put all ingredients into a large bowl. Blend 1/2 min. on low speed, scraping bowl constantly. Beat 3 min. high speed, scraping bowl occasionally. Bake 35-45 min. until wooden toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

I divided the batter and colored each portion brightly using Wilton concentrated gel colors from Michael's. With a 50% off coupon it was $5 plus tax for a set of 8.

I don't have a bundt pan, so I used my two glass loaf pans and it worked great. I put some chocolate batter on the bottom of my greased and floured pans and then added the balls. It looked like there wasn't enough chocolate mix, but it turned out great. I dipped each ball in the batter to be sure that every ball would be separated by dark brown. Then I poured the rest of the batter over the top and gently shook to be sure I didn't have air pockets. I set the oven at 350, instead of the 400 on the box, and cooked for 43 min. The toothpick came out clean and they were perfect!
I LOVED slicing! Being a rock lover, it reminded me of the marvel of cutting just a small distance from your first slice and being blessed with another different amazing piece of art from our God, the original Artist!! I've ALWAYS marveled at that with rocks...and these loaves were the same! SO FUN! My husband and I each ate a slice. At the risk of being redundant....SO FUN!!!! But I ran into a problem with the last couple of bites - they were too pretty to eat! I just wanted to look at them! LOL!Next time I want to replace the vanilla in the cake pops with another flavor so that when you eat you taste both! My daughter suggested a white cake with red and green balls for Christmas and a brother at church put his request in for a white cake with red velvet balls for Valentines!! :) It's just a happy cake and I have enjoyed it SOOOO MUCH! To help the woman who asked, I created two tutorials - one for turning all the pieces of Shimmering Angels into any shade of gold you want and the other to turn black and white to white. I chose an antique gold I like, but you can adjust it any way you want...and not just to gold - once you know how, you can change anything to any color in PS. I did it this way to show how to use four of the adjustment options available to us, but usually one is all you usually need.
